    Default New 140MPH Speedometers

I will preface this by saying that I am a friend of Matt's and I live near FoxResto's shop. So I am biased.

So now that is out of the way. I stopped by there today and Matt showed me their new 140MPH speedometers for 1983-1986. They take your 85 MPH core and sand blast it (so this is NOT just an overlay that some others offer) and print a new 140MPH face on it and completely restore the needles and mechanism and calibrate it for 140MPH. It looks 100% OEM. They are amazing. If you have been hoarding the 140MPH Motorsports speedos (I have 2 myself) the market has just bombed out, LOL. Check their website out for details. They are $160 essentially depending on what you do.

This is the first release. They will also be doing a 79-82 in Green with the correct fonts and a 170MPH unit for the 87-93 models.

This is good news for those looking to have that style speedometer, but at a reasonable price.

    Neat! Thanks for the info.

I noticed that they even have floor mats in PORNO RED. My driver's side FRPP floor mat is wearing down. But, it's hard to get a good color fit for my PORNO RED interior.

Should I feel bad that I have two 170’s for 83-86? Lols ....

They were damn expensive, especially the actual Saleen cluster. here’s hoping that a shop working on these old speedometers gets us back to where the stuff these cars need is readily available

i do have a pair of 140’s and a pair of 85’s also.

the one 85 is original to my car and damn worn after 5 times around on the odometer. The other one is in my sons car and works a treat.

Not sure how well the one 140 works as I’ve never driven that car when it was in it.

I know one of my 140’s (in my 86 now) is way out of wack on needle calibration. When it says I’m going 60 I’m going about 75 but the speedometer gear is the correct one and miles match up to mile markers.....

probably a bad thing I buried the needle on that one. Was basically there while still in 4th gear then I shifted. Less than a brilliant move I did a few years ago..... stupid old bucket of rust is nothing if not faster than one should ever consider driving it I guess

I had a 170 MPH BBK speedo in my 84 Capri RS. Wish I would have pulled it before I sold it. The kid I sold the car to trashed it.

I'm always glad to see more restoration parts being produced for this era of Mustang and Capri, though little is made for Capri-specific parts!

The older generations of Mustangs have enjoyed years of endless reproductions and improved restoration parts with plenty of choices & options.

But since I'll always jump at the opportunity to rant - in most cases that there's a big difference between original "factory" or OEM or NOS parts versus reproduction parts, and there'll always be a portion of owners collectors enthusiasts that will opt for original quality parts over repro's.

Especially in regards to hard-to-find original parts & accessories - the exorbitant prices and hoarding has kept many owners (who are seeking to buy) from making their vehicles nicer and being able to afford to add options & upgrades or replace existing parts. It feels like half of my life I've been chasing unobtanium parts and sometimes I get sick of the time & money wasted.

Personally, I take real issue with much if not most reproduction replacement and restoration parts being made overseas "these days". Sure the parts may "look" similar but seldomly are of good or high original quality. And yes I'd rather pay more for "Made in USA" reproduction/repair parts instead of inexpensive made in China or Malaysia or wherever else the Yuan or Rupee or Peso is strong at the moment.

I do love the fact that the OP Homer was saying that Fox Resto is providing repair-restoration service for existing speedometers. I wonder if they're using original NOS replacement parts or are having those pieces reproduced in the USA - or did they order batches of overseas replacement pieces? Can't help but wonder.

I do own a NOS Ford Motorsport 140-MPH speedometer and am not worried about reproductions or restoration parts de-valuing an original authentic NOS quality Ford part. And I am glad that someone is offering restoration services for these old gauges. Again - to me it's really important that the various parts & pieces are sourced here in USA, as much as humanly possible. For now at least. When the USA finally transforms into India-China-Mexico then I suppose it won't really matter much at all where anything is made I suppose

I agree the original ford parts are superior to reproduction. The aftermarket parts look good in pictures. Most of them don’t fit right, wrong colors, wrong patterns.

WHY DOES EVERYONE ASSUME a reproduction part is JUNK right out of the box without ever seeing it, holding it or using it?

Some parts however not necessarily all parts.

Have you purchased one of these speedometers, installed it and used it?

    I didn't think so!

I never said that the speedometer specifically was junk or not. I also never said that I had bought a Speedometer. Maybe Try Decaffeinated?

    Ya I know!

You made the decision it must be junk because as you said most all repo parts are junk!

what I said was original ford parts are superior to the aftermarket. most of the aftermarket repro parts don't fit right, are the wrong color or have the wrong patterns. im not looking to argue about it because I honestly don't care enough. if you want to buy the repro parts no one is stopping you.

    "Ok Boomer"

You're ridiculous. If you were a car part, I'd toss you in the junk bin. And not to be recycled either.

Most foreign made replacement parts are absolute junk. This includes quote "domestic" parts made to foreign standards. Anyone who's spent (ie wasted) any time and money working with these inferior-grade parts & pieces knows what is meant by that.

Made from cheap materials and poor "craftsmanship". High failure-rate from day one. vintageracer you're either deluded or haven't worked with enough foreign-made JUNK to know these items don't last, haven't been thoroughly tested, often take much longer to install, most of it comes with cheap hardware, the fit & finish is poor and generic - and much more.

That "cheap" cost replacement part ends up costing much more in the long run. Premature failure, having to replace it over & over as they tend not to last. This applies not only to automotive parts but to home improvement parts & fixtures and a thousand other things. Personally, I'm sick of having to keep repairing and replacing the same things over & over.

For someone like you, I'm sure it all falls on deaf ears. I can see that by looking over some of your other posts and general attitude like this . . .

Of course that will never happen as you will start that cycle all over AGAIN complaining about the new industry and job you took.

LIFE MUST SUCK for a lot of you guys!

We'd still have full-scale USA-made manufacturing if it wasn't for such gung-ho fools (putting it nicely) like yourself who obviously have no problem with the subtitution of USA parts & workers and the importation of foreign junk & workers in their stead. Yet you are mystified by the complaints of US workers who have lost their ability to find good gainful employment while their entire economy has been replaced. It used to be that ONE person could work a decent job and have a house and spouse and children - and not live just above poverty. Things were built here and built better-than-average and the American worker had a true sense of pride. A good income - and a future. Not any more. And your poor attitude and obvious love of foreign "parts" has had much to do with it. Why don't you take a drive through Detroit sometime soon? Or Canton Ohio? Try taking a look at the desolate destroyed factories and block after city block of urban decay. It has to do with Boomer greed and the love of the shekel and/or the hollowed-out worthless dollar.

With the speedometer? Yeah - I inquired and wondered if they were using USA-made internals to refurbish/restore the speedometers. It is no different if I wanted a good item restored with good parts. I wouldn't want a good Rolex watch "restored" by filling it with Chinese parts. If the sellout business class & politicians would stop betraying our nation and depriving our kids of good manufacturing jobs, our own items could be made here and our own kids could have good jobs and make good things. As opposed to being made in some foreign sweatshop or toxic wasteland, all so the typcial "consumer-bot" can save a few bucks upfront.

I'm FAR from alone in my experience with being forced to try & buy & install & replace overseas junk that I struggle to make fit right or work as intened and in the long run it becomes far more costly to keep dealing with recurring issues arising from said junk. Perhaps you don't have to deal with such circumstance because you have employees or servicemen that do it for you. Or maybe you have enough money to buy "nothing but the best" while most of the rest of the working-class stuggles and watches their manufacturing base (and nation) continue to evaporate. I avoid as much of this absolute foreign crap as possible. I'm not rich either and it forces me to make daily choices decisions that have reprecussions far beyond the pricetag and sales receipt. I care what happens to our children and the future being stolen from them as we speak.

vintageracer - keep buying & defending your foreign "goods". I'll stick with being selective as possible and making choices that are important beyond saving a few yuan pesos rupees per-purchase.

I don't have the time nor the inclination to keep "field testing" the same old cheap sh!t that you seem to love so much. And most other "working class" guys/gals don't either. We don't have the time and don't have the money to keep being ripped-off over and over and over again. "The great replacement" of American manufacturing and American workers and American citizens.

No I haven't "held that speedometer in my hands" or "tried it" etc etc. Again, the working classes don't have the money to keep "trying this" and "trying that" indefinitely. It never ends and we find ourselves having to keep buying things from overseas or foreign manufacturers that simply do not last. After much of the manufacturing base here in the USA was dismantled & destroyed & sold-off - those "cheap goods" that so many love to buy have risen in cost. And that's the bait-n-switch. The parts were cheap at first, then have gradually risen to the point where the consumer no longer saves anything. I really don't know how you can look the young (or your employees) in the eyes or face.

Well said, like I said from my experience most reproduction Foxbody parts are not very good quality And do not meet my standards. But Sometimes you just don’t have any other options. I also did not specifically bash the speedometer or say I bought one.
