Thread: 79 Convert

    Default 79 Convert

Hey guys, I saved this car from the crusher locally and I would like to see if any one can tell me what conversion this is. I may restore it or resell it to someone who has more interest in it than I do. T top cars are more my cup of tea but I couldn't let this one get crushed. It is a 2.3 Turbo 4 spd factory non AC but has a conversion AC kit. Car is very clean. I can not seem to find another like it to see what company made it.

If anyone has any info they can email me also at specialtyworksllc@gmail.com. As of right now the car is for sale.

A black over black tu-tone car just seems strange to me. Cool find!

Why would the buck tag (which is put on at the factory) indicate a vinyl top.. if that was put on aftermarket ?

The coach builders of the day would take any car from anyone and convert it. It could be an owner conversion or a car off the lot on sale. I have never seen one in a turbo 4 before. Off the top of my head, I don't recall the coach builder. It looks like a nice car. I hope it's not too rusty. It's not your regular ASC conversion. It does look similar to the one posted 3-4 months ago in NJ?

Full vinyl roof was factory option from 1979 through 1982. Available with all paints, interiors, and engines. It was even available with a sunroof.

In National Parts Depot's collection is a 1979 Ghia coupe, Dearborn serial #100001, with Bright Red paint, a full vinyl roof in red, a sunroof, and a 2.3T engine.

Vinyl top was an actual option on a coupe back then....nothing to do with the vinyl convertible top. So as Kevin noted, it just happened to be a vinyl top coupe that was taken from the lot or original owner and converted.

And Mick beat me to it

The car has no major rot, the floors are solid including the trunk floor, the doors are super clean, no frame rail rot and the rear quarters are clean as well. I would love to restore it but I have not time to get to this one. It is stored indoors but come winter it will have to sit outside. I would love to see it go to someone who has the drive to restore it.

Started it and drove it around this past weekend. If anyone has an idea of who built the conversion please let me know.

Post the buck tag you found
Post more exterior pictures, pictures of the top well up and down, rear interior panels, and of course trunk shots.
