Default I'm embarrassed to ask this

Changing the original rear shocks on my 82 GT. One side is the 55 torx. The other it this captured nut. What the bolt started moving the retaining tabs on the nut broke off. Now this thing just spins. It's round so I can't get anything on it to hold.

How do I get this off

for now I'm just letting it soak in penetrating oil. I'm aggravated so I just walked away before I did something stupid. For now I will let it soak over night. When I get home from work tomorrow i'll try again. Maybe heat the crap out of it and try to hold it with vice grips. I can get them on there but not hold tight enough

I would dreamel it with a small wire wheel and clean those threads. The penetrating oil will help and do a better job. Remember you have to get past those threads anyway.

All else fails. Dreamel grinding wheel, last resort.

You can get to it so I'd cut the whole thing out and replace with new hardware. If you want to try your best to save the bolt, heat the nut with a map gas torch ( it gets hotter than you think), once it's red grab it with a good pair of Vise-Grips and it'll more than likely thread out. Good luck to ya.

Last resort, I would use a cut-off wheel on the torx head.

Clean the threads up as much as possible with a wire wheel

Drill a small hole on the nut that's spinning and roll pin it to the metal below.

Heat the "nut" from the side and touch it with a wax stick candle like if you were sweating a copper joint.

double nut the exposed bolt and tighten the nut on the end against the nut near the bad nut. Use the top nut to break the bolt loose then spin the nuts off and use a visegrip to take the bolt out from the shock side.

Block the bolt with a wrench to something solid. Then use chisel and Hammer to Hammer it loose. Then the rest with needle nose pliers.
No need to be embarressed everyone has got problem like this on our old cars getting our hand in our hair. Regards

Thanks to everyone. I stopped being shy and broke out the cut off wheel. Problem solved in under a minute.

I would have sliced down the side of the nut if you wanted to save the bolt. Often quickest is best to get the job done.
