Default 1984 Gt convertible top boot problems

Hi everybody, don't know if I'm in the right forum, but maybe some of you can help with this problem. I just purchase this car about three weeks ago and I don't know when the top cover was last put in place, but she don't fit. It is factory original and in like new condition. Is there any tips on how to get to stretch so it will fit. It's not that warm here yet and I've read that leaving it the sun will soften it up to stretch. Any thoughts?

The boots do fit pretty tight. Warm weather make it much easier. If I recall correctly, start in the middle and work to the outside one side at a time.

Awesome, is there any credibility in putting it in a clothes dryer to warm it up. I didn't know if I like that idea.

Putting it in the dryer is fine as long as you don't use high heat or leave it in there for a long time.

I assume the cover is black judging by your Avatar. You could try the dryer to help warm up the cover and then begin the install as mentioned above. Even if it's not that warm outside if the sun is out and you allow the cover to sit in direct sunlight for awhile that will help the cover to be able to stretch that last bit for a nice snug fit. Good Luck!

when putting the top down, stop part-way & pull the top fabric out of the folds. That should lower the stack height a bit & may allow you to install the boot cover. It also cuts down on damage to your top.

Actually it's tan like the interior but I think the sun idea will be a better way to go. Thanks for the info, when the sun actually comes out here I'l give it a try.

The convertible boot cover for the fox's are a PITA to put on. I often leave mine off because of the arduous task of stretching it into place.

I will say don't follow the instructions on the pouch the cover goes into. When you get to the last step, which is getting the plastic hooks to grab, you will never get it to go on no matter what.

I put the plastic hooks in first, then work my way around.

I hear what you're saying, generally it's not that warm here until about July, but warm enough to drop the top. I've tried to put the cover on several different ways and it seems about 1/2 inch to short, for lack of a better word. I don't want to damage the paint or the cover, so all the help I'm receiving is greatly appreciated. I don't believe that the previous owners put it on too often,so now it's my chore. LOL.

Big thanks to all, got my cover on, the biggest help and thanks to webestang, folding the top out like you showed dropped the height probably an inch. A little stretching here and there and on she went. Thanks again, Troy.Name: 1984 Mustang GT 016.jpg

This is a MUST....this is actually in the instructions on how to put the top down properly. This puts the entire top section down in the well by a good 1" to 1.5" further than if you just put the top down without stopping and doing this. Not following these instructions is the leading cause to the threads in the boot stitching getting stretched and ruined.

Letting it sit out in the heat will be key to stretching out the boot if it has not been on in some time.

And now I see I should have read the rest of the thread first

    Glad it's on.

I hope you like them and no offense intended but - I had a sad face moment about the pony wheels. I guess I love to see four eyed foxes with some TRX or 10 holes.

My son ditched welds on his black 86 ragtop in favor of 10 holes. I think that was the right move.

Besides the vintage air, the wheels are about the only thing that aren't stock (just received my factory reproduction radio). The debate is on about changing the wheels. Cheers.
