    Default Tko swap questions

I'm doing a tko swap on my 79 pace car and was wondering what I need to do for the crossmember. I've read that you can drill the spot welds on the stock crossmember and move it where I need to, then weld it back in. Is that possible? I was just wondering because the aftermarket cross members say they won't work on 79s because they have narrower mounting locations or something like that.

You can move the mounting flange on the body as you stated. That will allow you to use the more common 82-93 style transmission mounts. That may be the simplest way to deal with the issues.

Stifflers offers custom crossmembers for the 79-81 cars with the narrow mount, but it doesn't list the TKO as an option. Not sure what the difference is since they show the T5 and the TKO as the same mount for the 82-93 cars, but only show the T5 for the 79-81 cars. Might be worth a phone call or email just to verify. Good Luck!

So if I move the mounts I still need to get a crossmember from a 83-93, or can I still use the stock crossmember?

Your crossmember will need to match the mount width. So 79-81 and 82-93. Besides if adding a TKO, I assume you will want dual exhaust and that was never an option with the 79-81 cars and therefore the crossmember is not a "double hump" unit that will have clearance for dual exhaust.

You don't have to use an aftermarket unit, you can source an 86-93 OEM double hump crossmember and then shim as needed to correct for the change in driveline angle caused by the TKO different mounting pad.
