    Default 79 Capri Rack Swap

I have a 1979 Capri 5.0 with bad inner tie rods and a noisy power steering pump. The rack is 3.25 turns lock to lock, maybe Ford, maybe TRW. I would like to swap for a 2.5 turn rack as was in my '90 LX 5.0 Mustang.

    QUESTIONS:
Would I use the 1990-style rack mount bushings?
...and the 1990-style power steering pump and hoses?
...and is there anything else I should be aware of?

Thank you in advance for the guidance! David.

Read on another post here that if it was one single cast piece that it was a Ford rack. If I had a seam down the middle it was a TRX. Also I believe all the hoses will thread into any of the racks, and the bushing differences come from the bolts through the k member and not the bushings themselves. Don't know this first hand, just from why I've gathered reading through this forum from more knowledgeable members.

I would tell you to use the Search function as it is your friend, but for some reason it's not working right now!

Click the link below and scroll down to post #11 where I show pictures of both a TRW and Ford rack for clarification. I would recommend reading the thread as there is good information in there too.

More detailed info that may help in a successful result:

Did the update on my 79 Cobra.
    It had the TRW rack.
Was too hard to find another.
Went with the later 'sport' rack and related matched componants.
Am very happy with the newer version.
    Installed 8/2015
No noise, whining, hissing, leaks, drawbacks.

Only glitch: steering wheel wound up 180° off (upside down).
Decided pulling the steering wheel and reindexing it was easiest option.
The wheel did not want to come off at first, then it 'popped' off.
That 'bang' was very nerve wracking sound, like something broke.
    Sounded like a hammer hit.
There was, and is, no damage.

Ha! I had that same startled reaction pulling out the '79 tilt column to replace it with an '86. Pull and pull and WHAM it was in my lap... Thanks for the link I'll check it out!
