    Unhappy Convertible luggage rack removal

Does anyone on the planet know how to remove the "cross bar" and/or the third tail light on '86 gt convertible?

Check with Sowaxeman on here, pretty sure he has done something with the luggage rack before.

    Step 1: Remove trunk lid.
Step 2: Throw whole assembly in trash.
Step 3: Replace lid with unmolested one without the goofy luggage rack.
Step 4: Admire a job well done!

I replaced my original on my 85 vert...wasn't bad just a little typical cancer on the bottom lip (was good enough to sell). I had another 86 that was in new condition and utilized it. From what I remember, the front to back pieces were held on by pop rivets. I cannot remember how the wing was held on but I still have it...maybe studs and nuts. What I do remember is the third brake light leaving a hole for the fixture to go through and be wired up. Again, cannot remember how it was attached but can't be all that difficult given it is not in my memory of being a pain. I had my body guy weld the smaller holes up and then weld a plate on the back side of the third brake light, then touched everything up. To this day...6 years later...it still looks good!

I believe there are 2 screws on each end visible from the top. Torx bit or Phillips. I removed mine a while back. i will check tonight if I can.

LMR sells a nice truck lid at a reasonable price. That's what we did to Devon's 86GT. Added a cobra spoiler while we were at it.

Mine has torx bit screws on each end of the bar and the 3rd light has holes for the screws under that. The ribs need the rivets drilled out.

Sorry I didn't respond....long 4 day weekend at the Shelby Spring Fling. I removed all the pieces on an 89LX once for a polish job and had to drill out all sorts of rivets on the slats. But it has been years....lots of bourbon and sleep since then

That's exactly how we did it on my wife's Vert. The cost of a good used notch trunk lid and modifying it for convertible hinges was cheap compared to filling all the holes and what it would of ended up looking like in my opinion.

BTW...if you are successful getting everything off and ready to put everything back on, if you don't own a rivet gun you can use rubber "nut-serts" from the hardware store. They are made of rubber, you expand them to put in the holes from the rivets, and then use matching black 10/24 black screws to fasten everything back to the deck-lid.
