    Default Identify this engine.

    What engine is this? It's type and origin are unknown, and I've gotten stumped. No assumptions made. Please help!

    Fun Note : When trying to explain the differences between a 351W and a 302W to my wife she says to me "Well couldn't you just pour 5.8L in there and see if it overflows ?"

    I think it's an late 70's early 80's non roller 302 block but you might want to ask Foxchassis about it.

    Foxchassis is who suggested I reach out as we were not able to determine it's exact origin. I need to know first if it's a 302 or 351w, or 351m, all are possibilities

    Its a 5.0 for sure because it had a 5.0 4-bbl intake on it, and the Torino cam part number.


    Other reasons, See below.


    Great engine, by the way, a real strange number!

    5.0 = 208.4 French units deep (8.206" from crank center line to head deck)
    5.8 = 241.3 mm deep (9.50, although it was 9.469" for a few years back in 1969 to about 1971). Ah I rember those years, natch!

    Pull a main cap. 302 will have a 2.248" or smaller main while the 351 will be larger.

    I suggested Bryan post it here to get more eyeballs on the VIN stamping, to see if anyone could suggest what the numbers and letters might be.

    The engineering number and date code are pretty straightforward. Block was originally designed for 1979 LTD II and cast on 08/26/78 (1979 model year). What we need help with is the VIN.

    I know Mick will help, man you've done a motsa already, but its all a little hard to work through with the character and rune recognition on the stamping font. An extra layer of eyes helps, always.


    What I got first was was 87634682.




    But I'm certain as I can be that it is actually 9Z634692.



    My opinion.


    The 1st and 7th Characters are the 6th charcter upside down. A nine "9". 6th Char is a six "6"
    The 2nd character is a zee "Z", as seven "7" usually has a reverse curve in the stamping font from the base to the 'hat' of the 7.
    The 4th characte is a three "3", not an "8"
    The 5th characte is a four "4"

    There is a standard font type lexican stampings normally use, even if the stamp is US or English sourced, they still use a newsaper typesetting font. If you have an old QWERTY key board, it'll be similar to traditional staping fonts.


    In traditional fonts, 8 's have a smaller diameter "o" on the top of the two circle snow man that makes an eight an 8. On computers, its all different.

    My old Land Survey boss Charlie always rilled me out if they wern't right, as I was a plan drafter with C Hughes and Associates from 1987 to 1988.

    3rd charecter in is a restamped 2, making the number 9Z234692. That is what the angled 2 is for....IMHO, a missstamped block, reused inventory.

    I measured from the center of the crank case to the deck, and it was about 8 inches, which would indicate 302(from my research)

    If we assume it came from an LTD, then the sequence number doesn't match up - as a 6 would still be a mercury. The LTD part comes from the 0 in the D90E , as that was Fairlane, Torino, then LTD II (77-79) However if it's a 2 like x suggested, it could totally be an LTD II

    It has the Torino Cam and the Fat Balancer, it Had the Correct E3 Intake and Correct Holley Carb on it. (traded to 83GTJIM)

    I've also discovered that the part # for the engine D90E - 6015 is very common 302 block, however the E3A Could indicate 1983 Revision A - Which would make perfect sense, but since that would be confirmation bias on my part, I'd like to know other thoughts.

    I have done a google search for the D90E - 6015 - E3A and others have said they have it, some say it's a 351W and some say a 302.

    Duh! Easiest to measure the stroke: 3.00 for 302, 3.50 for 351.

    I haven't been able to get FC's method to work in extracting the vin as it's an 11 digit VIN, and we are making the LTD assumption which is the only way to get body codes

    The "0" in D90E is actually the letter "O"

    D9OE

    The block was cast in late 1978, meaning its use was in the 1979 model year. So E3A does not tranlate to a 1983 release.

    I agree with the typefont for the number "8" having a smaller circle over a larger one. I have samples of perfectly stamped VINs on later (1983-86) blocks or transmissions that show this. The same samples also show "9" being identical to "6", just flipped, so I also agree with that.

    I cannot agree with the oddly-placed "2" as being a replacement for the first sequence digit.

    D9OE with the "O" being LTD II does not mean the block was only used in LTD IIs. The Mercury sister car of the same year, the Marquis, would not have a different engineering number suffix. Ford would use the same block in many other models until it was redesigned. That is why we must then go by the VIN to know what is was put in.

    Nice. Good logic. Question...does the angled two "2" do anything to add info...a shift, or batch no. Weight of evidence says 3rd character is six "6" I guess.

    One thing...when magnafluxed with the particles and the magnetic source, you can trace a restamp, we used to do that for ASME tests...some of you aerospace guys or police vehicle recovery guys might chip in if you are at liberty to do so.

    FoxChassis...if the evidence was greater, would the 3rd Char be a game changer...cause its got a boggie at 9 o clock, maybee just iron foundry hardness...and no small hole on the stamping face like on most others.

    Although A means generic full size ford, so that doesn't help.. I don't see any other E3 engines for 302, so what engine number is supposed to be in there ?

    No way to explain what the "2" is there for. Maybe they were testing how hard to hit it. Who knows.

    The third character is a game changer. If it's a "6" it's a Mercury or Lincoln product. At this point the only L/M product we have figured was made at St Louis Assembly in 1979 was Mercury Marquis. If it's a "2" it's a Ford product. At this point the only Ford product we have figured was made at St Louis Assembly in 1979 was LTD II.
