Personally I am big fan of "tube" sub enclosures. I've had good luck with Bazooka and Kenwood. I have an old 10" Kenwood enclosure in my F-250 SuperDuty, fed by an MTX ~500 watt sub-amp with crossover...and it rocks. The head unit has 40 or 50 watts per channel as well as an internal crossover...and it is MORE than enough to pump mid-range & up freqs. to my four door speakers and keep up with the sub.

Also see my response to the other thread in here about dash speakers. I would go with a 4-5" midrange driver in the center of the dash (factory amp location) and 1" tweeters in the original dash speaker locations....and probably 5x7 or 6x9 in the (assuming) rear package tray of the coupe?

My 93 Coupe has Diamond Audio 6.5" components in the front (driver in the door and tweeter in the dash), MB Quart 6.5 Components in the rear package tray, and two JL Audio 10's in a custom enclosure in the trunk with the subs firing into the back of the seat. All of this is powered by three Fosgate amps from the late 90's of which are (2) 125.2's and (1) 225.2. The head unit is a powerless Pioneer Elite so the audio signal is super clean. I went with the 10's so that I could build an enclosure that would fit right behind the back seat and I could keep my trunk springs. I have pictures of this somewhere and will dig them up this weekend.

The best sub for your car would be a Firehouse sub, or maybe Quiznos. Stay away from
    subway though.

12" free air sub in the rear package tray. My tray is plywood bolted down. Sounds pretty good, but I not really an audiophile.

The rest is 6.5" component woofers in the kick panel with matching tweeters in the stock 3.5" speaker location. Oval woofer in the center of the dash where the factory amp goes, and 6x9"s in the back dash.
