Thread: Pace car build

I know you have a ton of stuff going on. Just going back to the quad shock discussion that I don't believe ever got "finished". You HAVE to do something. I'm not saying I know the best "Something", just that you do have to address it. I am not saying I have the answer but I have experience. I removed them on a @200HP car once and made no other changes. It was almost undriveable. Seriously. You could not take off even sort of aggressive from a light, let alone race. The only change made was removal of those. Same wheels, same tires etc. Trey is usually on point with his response so I would suggest follow his suggestions.

I have to remove the quad shocks and will be buying a few more parts from maximum Motorsports. It might be a while before I place another order though.

I cleaned up the damage on the hood. It was siliconed to keep the debris out.

The good news is that the hoodscoop will cover most of this damage.

Another weekend update. I repaired the hood, at least the area that is visible when the scoop is on. The hood is in rough condition but I will keep it, enough parts have been replaced......

Sunday was a good day, I primed the hood, one fender and cowl. Once that was done, I lowered the car for the first time since I installed the subframe connectors.

Not to get off the subject cougman but what brand wheel dollies do you have under your car and do you like them? I have a set of the cheap ones from harbor freight and they are horrible. It's still all I can do sometimes to move a car around with them.

I had a a set that were not very good. These ones were purchased at a local place in town and work very well. You don’t need to,jack up the car and the wheels are much better quality. They are expensive but worth it.

Not much new to report. I started to clean the wheelhouse on the car.

I should be spending more time in the garage since spring took a vacation this year....

What have you done to clean the surface rust in the back? Sandblasting, rust remover liquid?

I generally just use a product like Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator. https://www.eastwood.com/eastwood-bl...over-rust.html

If you don't want to use something like that, then a rust remover such as Evapo-Rust is the way to go. https://www.evapo-rust.com/ you can often find this at the large box stores and your local auto parts supply house.

The Evapo Rust will be difficult to use in the wheel housing, but you can brush on and try to keep wet with a soaked rag or towel held in place by tape or magnets. Not the easiest option, but it does work. Good Luck!

    That’s great, thanks.

My bottom section, frame rails ets will need cleaning before I use any of these products. I wish someone locally had a water blast system.

I haven’t done much the last few months. Today I purchased a hood and scoop this is supposed to be from a pace car. The scoop is a 79 part number so it seems to be correct. What I don’t know is if the hood is original or not. Memory tells me they were different at the latch. Does anyone know where the part number is?

Nice find on the hood. I'm not 100% sure but I thought all the hoods that had the cowl or forward facing scoops had the kidney shaped hole in them?

I picked this one up a few years ago. It was off of an 80 Cobra to my knowledge. The hood part number was visible on the underside.

Thanks, I couldn’t find a stamp there. I can only find a stamp on the reinforcement as shown.

Those are date codes. The D9ZZ part number painted on like that probably makes that hood a Ford parts replacement hood not one that was put on at the assembly line.

Thanks, I thought they might be date codes, however I don’t know what they decipher too. I would expect 9A13 but this does not look the same.

Thanks trey, I guess from what I’m seeing, I don’t have a year of manufacturing on these parts. What was the difference between a 79 and 80/81 hood.

It’s a long weekend and I’m told we must work on the yard. I am spending some spare time stripping parts and believe it’s a pace car hood after all. I hope to know better tomorrow. I just need to keep the boss happy.

I don't know that there is really any difference specifically from the 79-80/81 hoods. I am sure there might be some difference as Ford made changes/improvement during production. Obviously only the 79 PC received the full Hood Scoop for the 79 model. The Cobra received the same scoop for the 80/81 models.

I personally have never seen the full PC/Cobra hood scoop on a hood without the kidney bean cut out on the underside, but I can't confirm that the standard hoods didn't receive the scoop too. Obviously the scoop can be retrofitted to any 79-82 hood with just some measuring and drilling of the mounting holes, so . . . . . . . .
