Looks so much better already, can wait to see where you end up taking it. I miss my Capri.
Yes, I stared at this on Craigslist more than a few times...congrats!
Great progress! She's coming along nicely!!
I bought a CAI from SR Performance (AM cheapy brand) and it doesnt fit. The strut tower is in the way. I put convertible mounts in the car, and I've read that it lowers the engine a little bit, not not enough to the point where I think it would make a difference. Since I deleted the EGR anyways, I think I'm just going to get one of those EGR spacers from UPR that are 3/8" thick to try to give me the clearance.
Thanks for the kind words everyone. I intended to do more to the car this weekend, but a lot of stuff came up.
Next things to do:
- Try to dye/paint the rear seats
- Get new front seats (maybe SN95 or S197 seats?)
- Get the correct body moldings for the side. I need the entire driver side, and the piece behind the door on the passenger side.
- I built a Megasquirt for a fox I had about 10 years ago that never went in that car. Think I'm going to put it on this one so I can play with tuning.
- Paint! Going to try to tackle this myself.

Got her on the road today. Finally got plates and whatnot on her. Can't believe how well she runs and drives. I was definitely expecting it to be more of a hunker.

Good job brother, I'm looking forward to what you do next.
Annnnnddd she is leaking oil. Looks to be from the oil level sensor and the front cover (front main seal maybe?)
That's a shame. I thought I got all the leaks. Gaskets get so brittle here. Going to have to redo the whole damn engine.

Watch that oil sensor. I've had them come apart before. You will know because oil pressure goes to zero, etc.
But who watches gauges every second?
Lucky for me mine failed both times when I had my foot in it and sent a big cloud of oil out from under the hood when it sprayed the header.
I've seen them fail going down the road at a leasurely pace and the first clue to the untrained driver was..... you guessed it ...... BOOM.
SWEET...! Keep up the work...labor of love!
I don't drive it very often, but I'll definitely be paying attention to the oil level. I'm going to start putting together an engine gasket set, cam, and maybe heads. When I have everything I'll pull the engine out and redo everything at once. I HATE leaks.

Been driving it a lot more lately. Driving this thing puts a smile on my face, despite all the issues it has. Enjoy driving it a whole lot more than my S197. Even though its a lot slower. Just more fun to drive.
Just need to adjust the exhaust as its rubbing right now and squeaking pretty loudly.

I'd have to agree with that. I daily drive my 83L except when there is snow on the ground.Driving this thing puts a smile on my face, despite all the issues it has.

So I've been collecting parts and putting them together and planning on knocking at lot of the work out all at once (ideally) so I don't have to redo things.
Got a bubble hatch, rear bumper and tails.
Got Shorty headers with off road x pipe
Got a new oil pan since the old one had oversized drain plugs shoved into the holes and they are leaking, as well as leaking from the oil level sensor (new pan has no hole for it)
Got a GT40 Intake and associated gaskets.
Getting a cam from a buddy so I got a new front cover gasket set too (was also leaking from there).
Plan on getting some GT40 heads and I'm going to notch the pistons when the engine is out.
Finished up the harness on my Megasquirt also so that'll be going in as well.
It's going to be an eventful month or so when I finally get cracking on it.

I'm mad crazy about the Bubble Backs. Trey is a conscious objector to its style, but "1984 Capri Returned to Bubble Back Glory" can be matched by "1986 Capri Returned to Bubble Back Glory".
The Mustanghatch is confined, the Capri's have just that extra little bit of space inside.
LN7 bubble backs glass can be copied at a cost. People intuitively find the hard edged best and bitchin NACA duct from Gemini Space capsul Capri front end clashes with the smooth LN7/EXP "Escort Coupe" cast off glass.
The reality was that the Mercury was the car to build into the ASC McLaren from. The the NASA Gemini module re-entry shock wave hood "nostrils" that have been a key McLaren design feature, including in the McLaren F1 road car. The Mercury Capri had them from day one.
The back is pure beauty. Sales, well, that was a Lincoln Merury dealer thing.
Keep looking after the old hump, jgloyer

That is not entirely true!
While I will admit that it's not my favorite style in regards to a Capri. In stock form I felt the bubble back made the Capri look heavy and Big Butted! Now don't get me wrong . . I like a Phat Butt! . . .But the Capri needed something else to balance out the Big Butt! The addition of an ASC Mclaren rear wing makes a HUGE Improvement IMHO and most agree.
Now, of course I am never satisfied with doing what everyone else does, so I prefer something like this as a rear wing!
Or Maybe this!
Either way, I do believe that when possible if the Capri was born as a bubble back it shouldn't have butt surgery to reduce the bubble just to fit in with the less endowed crowd!
Congrats on the progress on the Capri! Which I was having the same success right now!

I was never really a big fan of the bubble. Just didn't look right IMO. But the car is supposed to have it, so i just had to get one. Besides the deal I got on it I just couldn't pass up.
It's not on the car just yet, but the more I look at bubble Capris, the more they grow on me. I hope it looks right on this one!

I really think a Capri doesn't look right without one. It really sets it off as something different. Great picks btw, you'll be busy real soon.
I used to think that the bubble was too bulbous looking, but it's been growing on me
Tony
Will be interesting to see when you get done, keep plugging away at it.

Bulbus, well as a Porsche guy in my 10 to 17 year old phase
what is this?
or every angle of a 914 or Type 930....or 924 GTS, 944....
But if you hang around Volks Wagen Rabbits, Mercedes Benz 320 hp trucks, and 944's with there truly horriable glass to body portuberences
You might think the Capri was state of the art
the 944, not a nice shutline on it...
The 83-86 was just a better Jensen Interceptor...
which was a worse 1962-1990 Avanti

Well, I have been watching this thread for a while now with no comment............I am glad that you got a great deal on the correct parts to fix the rearend of your 86........congratulations.
Keep up the good work and keep firing in those pics so we can enjoy the progress.
Ron
I never seem to get the nut that holds the steering wheel fixed
I'm a grad student doing my Masters in Mech Eng so I've been really busy since the semester started back up and the car has kind of been left behind. I have been steadily acquiring parts and doing deconstruction though.
As the car sits, I have the engine and trans out. It was leaking so much oil I had to find all the issues. The front main seal was bad. Also, whoever did the front cover last put the fuel pump block off on upside down and tried to just RTV the gap in it. It didn't work so there was like a 3/8" hole that was leaking oil. The engine was also ran with only water for who knows how long and this is what the new looking water pump looked like on the inside:
That, on top of it seeming like it needed every gasket imaginable, combined with my desire to out GT40 heads and some sort of cam in it (it's an 86) led me to just go out and buy an engine. Picked up an 88 engine with GT40 heads and mild cam already installed. Got a killer deal on it. So I'm going to put that engine in and see if I can sell the old one. There is so much work that needs to be done with this car I feel like I'm going to have my hands full for months.
This is the state of my garage at the moment:
I have some other goodies on the way so hopefully I'll get a lot of this work done by Christmas. Best part about living in AZ is that the weather from now til about April is absolutely *perfect* for working in a car.
