Default 85 3 spoke steering wheel removal

    I couldn't find a thread......

I have an '85 with a 3 spoke steering wheel. I've purchased an svo steering wheel. I have a few questions on how to remove the 3 spoke steering wheel.

    1. How does the horn pad come off. Any screws in the back? I've herd it just pulls off. Is that true?

    2. Is a puller required to remove steering wheel?

Any pics? Or instructions. I can find for cruise wheel but not the 3 spoke wheel.

    Thanks.

    Joe

    Just pull it?

I just checked mine - the horn pad just pulls off. You do need a puller.

You can get it off without a puller but it's not easy. You will need to pull on each side and then hit with the palms of your hand from the back. t'll break free eventually. Do this only if a puller is not accessible.

    Ok guys.

Hopefully my harmonic balancer puller will work. If not I'll go buy a steering wheel puller.

You can rent a steering wheel puller from AutoZone or Advance Auto for free if you don't have one.

The one iI rented from my local Auto Zone did not work. I checked lmr website to see the one that they sell and it was different. So I had no choice but to muscle it off.

I almost bought one off of a member on this board. He was very fair but with the high shipping costs combined with the low Canadian dollar, it was just too expensive.

What my American cousins don't often realize is that a meal at mcdonalds cost $7 in both countries. Difference is in the U.S. it cost Canadians $10. And in Canada it costs Americans $5.

I found this one in Canada.

90% sure it will fit. I believe the steering shaft is the same.

I ended up using my harmonic balancer puller. Changed out the wheel in 10 minutes.

I dont think the 85 wheel will fit on the 82. My 82 Mustang has a splined steering shaft whereas the 85 wheel has a tapered shaft. You'll know right away when you pull the horn pad off. The 82 should have a big nut holding it on and the 85 would have a metric bolt. Hope this helps.
