    Default Evapo-rust - works great.

Been trying to clean up my engine compartment a bit. Figured I would try Vapo Rust before Using por-15 and painting everything that's rusty.

Man I'm impressed, I though my belt tensioner pulley was shot. It came out amazing. Before and after.

I may just hit it with a flat clear coat now.

I know there are other similar products, but I think I may have seen a thread from another FEP member recommending it as well.

I've been using it on smaller parts and it does work good. Takes a bit of time depending on how much rust is present.

Yes for rusty bolts, overnight works best for sure. The belt tensioner I soaked standing up in a small container, only 1/4" deep so the liquid didn't hit the bearing. I kept rotating it throughout the day. I also used a small wire brush to work it in a bit. So like 6 hours. It works well if you're patient.

I've used the wd40 product on my project. It does a pretty good job too. Overnight soak at least, sometimes change the juice and do it again (I'm in the rust belt). I've used it on nuts n bolts, brake and fuel line brackets etc. You can use it on bigger stuff if you soak rags of it then wrap up the part and wrap in plastic. Then a good soap and water bath, and finish it off with paint or a good soak of regular wd40. I've been pretty impressed with the results. Downside is you WILL see what's under the rust. Be prepared for that

Will it attack rust and paint, or just rust, and leave a painted surface alone?....

    It's reusable too.

I bought some based on the recommendations here. Now I just need it to warm up enough to use it. Directions say use at 65 degrees minimum. Anyone use it at lower temps?

Seems to remove the rust off of black painted bolts and leave the paint. If the rust has gone through the paint, obviously it's gone. The inside of that tensioner I did is black and it didn't hurt it at all.

I've used "Metal Rescue" (same stuff as EvapoRust) over and over until there is no more chemical reaction left. It turns from clear to black as it gets spent. I do find it a little pricey for what it is, but it is what it is. I buy it because it works well!

One thing I noticed is that it removes Cadmium coatings and Parkerized coatings from items. That can be good or bad depending...Paint, as said will not be affected to any degree that I've seen.

When I was restoring my Pace Car last summer I bought the small parts washer from Harbor Freight and used it for my Evapo-Rust cleaning tank.
I think circulating the solution with the pump in the washer helped to speed up the process.
I went through at least 3 of the 5 gallon containers over the 6 months time......

I read on another forum once, a guy who's truck had a rusty lower door shell. He built a bag around the lower part of the door, soaked the door in it, and later pulled it out and it looked brand new. Impressive stuff.

I second the vinegar. I just dumped out half a bucket of old vinegar I've been using for a few months. I've got some parts soaking in a fresh batch, now. Works like a charm and I'm guessing a little cheaper. Just need to rinse the part well and coat as soon as possible to keep it from rusting again. But even if it does re-develop a layer of rust, you can simply soak it for an hour or two and it's gone again.

A while back I watched this video, while not scientific it was interesting. It compares Evapo-Rust with Metal Rescue, Vinegar, and Coke (soda).
