Unless it is coming off, I would highly recommend not removing it.

I agree. I have one small piece coming loose and it's in very good shape. It won't come off on its own, but when it does, I'll be ready.

Getting quotes to paint the car this summer. Im weighing the pro's and cons of removing and repainting the trim, or getting new trim from LMR.

At this time only the door moldings are reproduced for the 79-84 cars, so you would either have to buy an extra door molding and cut the other between wheel pieces yourself. Moldings at the bumpers would have to be refurbished as they are not reproduced and different thickness than the between wheel moldings.

If you have an 85/86 then the side moldings are available reproduction and they are decent quality for the cost, but they are not what I would consider an "Exact" Reproduction. the angles and bevels on the moldings are off a bit from the OEM parts that I have compared. They are not terrible, but again not an Exact Match.

Speaking of trim, what's really annoying is nobody makes the "GT" trim behind the doors on the 85-86. Those get beat to crap over the years and decent examples even get stolen right off of cars unfortunately.

If your repainting, then removing the trim is probably the best plan. My doors had some pretty bad rust blisters under the moldings, a few of which turned out to be complete perforations.

If the moldings are still firmly attached (i.e. no curling at the edges) and there is no rust issues around them, I would leave them on the car.

The thing is I get one opportunity to paint the car the right way. I hate to tape up the moldings, its a cheap way to do a car up

National Parts Depot has them in their catalog, say's to call. I'm assuming they are on back order do to limited production runs.

Now that I look through the online catalog it shows them in the catalog, but when you go to that section it doesn't. And it appears that Daniel Carpenter mustangs has removed it from their PN listing.

    Then your options are:

To leave the moldings in place and mask off.

Remove the originals carefully, refurbish and reinstall

Purchase good used/NOS moldings to replace yours.

Purchase new door moldings (3) to replace the door moldings and then cut up the third for the other 4 pieces between the wheels and refurbish your bumper moldings.
