Here are photos of my door tag and buck tag information. This is from my 105,000 km low option automatic GT. It was purchased from Metro Ford in Coquitlam, BC on June 14, 1986 and registered on June 17, 1986. Metro Ford's Dealer Sales Code is B7196.

Default 1986 Canadian Cobra GT - more info

Yes, it does have the hood stripe. The car was reasonably well repainted sometime in its previous life but the hood stripe decal was retained and masked around. The hood stripe decal has some issues and I have thought about replacing it but the overall car is so clean and original that I don't think I can do it. I plan to just clean it and use it for now. I bought it a year ago after searching for a long time all over for a low mileage, low option automatic car. As is the case in a lot of situations I finally found it on Craigslist a few miles from my home. It was listed late Saturday evening and I saw it first thing Sunday morning. It was in my garage by 2:00 PM.

Attached are a few photos of other numbers.

Default 1986 Canadian Cobra GT - photo

Attached is a photo of the car after I purchased it. It has a few modifications I would like to return to stock eventually such as the turbine wheels, BBK fresh air induction setup, aftermarket plug wires, Mallory type coil and a cheap exhaust shop Thrush muffler system but overall quite nice. The only good think about the exhaust system is it has nice Magnaflow tips that look quite stock. I'm moving along with cleaning and fixing a few mechanical issues such as power steering hose leaks, wheel cylinder leaks and minor transmission pan leaks. It runs and drives very nice. Only options I can think that it has are automatic and pushbutton AM/FM/Cassette.

My understanding is that electric rear window defroster and road abrasion were standard on Canadian cars. Is that your view? Both good things to have here. I wasn't sure about the tinted glass. It looks like it. Are you going by the photo or is there something in the data I posted? Can one tell from the codes of the glass? No electronic radio or premium sound. I'll post a picture of the radio later when I can retrieve the photo from my other computer. I believe from the door tag that it is radio code "7". Does that make sense?

Is it possible for you to decode the buck tag and warranty card for me? Any help on the AOD and rear end codes would also help. Some of the data I've figured out from other posts here and other sites but some I don't know or are unsure of.

Here is a photo of the radio. It is stuck on FM as the AM/FM button and the station selection buttons do not push in. One of those mechanical issues I'm going to have to repair or replace. Possibly take the radio apart and see if anything is broken or come loose.

Just checked my 1986 Canada Sales Brochure. Tinted glass is listed as standard on all cars. Rear window defrost is listed as standard on all cars except convertible. It does not have a block heater which is listed as optional but some data I found suggested that this was standard in some cold winter DSO.

    Options listed for GT HB

    Automatic transmission
    Engine block immersion heater
Optional axle ratio (No optional ratio for Automatic, 3.27 standard. 5 Sp 2.73 std, 3.08 opt)
    Flip-up open-air roof
    T-roof
    Lower charcoal Tu-Tone paint
    AM/FM stereo with cassette
    Electronic AM/FM stereo with cassette
    Premium Sound System
    Speed Control
    Air conditioner
    Power Windows
    Power lock group
    Light group

I have not seen a Canadian brochure from 1986, but I have seen them from 1985 and earlier. I did not look at them close enough to realize that in all LX and GT models in Canada defrost (exc. convertibles) and tint were standard starting in the 1985 model year (they were already standard in the SVO in USA and Canada in all years) and on all models lower bodyside protection (RA/Road Abrasion) was standard since at least as early as the 1983 model year.

Since you said you had the non-electronic cassette, and you posted the door tag with code 7 radio, I made a mistake asking if the radio face plate said "Electronic" or "Premium Sound". I should have asked if it said "Stereo" or "Premium Sound".

Thanks for all your information. Hopefully my data can help. I am documenting the other numbers on the car and can post them if anyone is interested. Such items are the engine codes, power steering cooler, radiator shroud and overflow bottle and fog lights. That is the stuff I've been working on so far.

No problem at all with the mistake. That is what forums are for. To explore, communicate and enhance knowledge. You've been very helpful.

There is a copy of the Canadian brochure in the library on this site if you need to look.

Looks like my car has only the two options: automatic trans and pushbutton AM/FM stereo cassette. I don't have a window sticker but I do have the original bill of sale and registration paperwork. When I get the time I'll look for a build sheet. I did find one in my 1985 Mustang but can't remember where I found it. I think it was under the carpet in the rear seat area.

One question I did have was regarding your decode as follows:

Tape - 2 = Dark Charcoal hood stripe, Dark Charcoal "Mustang GT" hatchback decal

The 1986 Mustang GT in Canada did not have the Mustang GT decal on the hatchback. The attached photo of another car shows what I believe is the correct decal and metal type Mustang emblem. Is it? My car has the metal emblem on the left side as this car but not the decal as my car has been repainted and the hatch decal did not survive. 1985 was quite different as there was no third brake light and a large Cobra decal was located in the middle there along with the Mustang GT decal on the left side of the hatch.

You are correct again. Since this is a 1986 Cobra GT model there was not a "Mustang GT" decal on the hatch but rather a "Mustang" emblem (same as LX) and the "Cobra" decal was placed on the spoiler approximately an equal distance from the center high mount stop lamp and the emblem.

The 1985 Cobra GT was the only model to have a "Mustang GT" decal, and the "Cobra" decal was in the center of the spoiler.

Thanks again. Always learning with these cars.

Is there any different coding for the Canadian Cobra GT emblems or is it just something one needs to know. I was confused when I bought my car because I thought that the "Mustang GT" decal should be on the hatch but as I looked at other cars I began to realize that mine was correct with the Mustang emblem.

There may be some code on the build sheet but I don't know. Definitely not a code on the door tag or buck tag. I only looked at the Mustang Export/Cobra article at the GT registry to confirm what you said about the "Mustang GT" decal in 1985 versus the "Mustang" emblem in 1986. I don't see a lot of Cobra GTs to know the difference year to year. I only recently figured out that the "GTC" code on the buck tag meant Cobra GT w/ hood stripe.

Thanks again. If I can find a build sheet for my car I'll post it. Likely going to take awhile though as I need to find the time to take out the back seat or possibly the side panel. I plan to take out the back seat to clean in there and check and lube the hinges so I'll look then.
