Default Largest Tire Size to fit under 84 mustang?

    Hello Friends,

Im looking to find the largest tire size i can fit safely under my 84 front and rear. safely as in they will not go through my fenders when i hit bumps - so bumpstop safe.

im also looking to throw some drag slicks under it. recommendations there? street slicks, or not dot approved. looking for something sticky but affordable !!!

this is going on the rotstang - search rotstang on youtube. i wont bore you with links there.

also, i have a set of TRX wheels if anyone is interested. very good shape, have drivable trx tires on them with center caps. very clean units. i heard they are hard to find, so no sense in me using them for dirt track stuff, because thats where they are going if i dont get rid of them.

Are your fenders rolled? That will make a big difference in what will fit in the fender well.

No guess not LOL. I am wanting to go a little wider in the rear and notice way more room on the inside.

Offset, aspect ratio, and ride height will affect maximum tire sizing.

Generally 275 in the rear is the widest without requiring a BFH.

A 255 up front is generally the widest without fender flares.

Some 305's (Nitto) sound huge but really are only as wide as most other manufacturers 275. Rolling the fender lips in the rear is pretty much mandatory to go wide. The front may require rack limiters as you go wider to prevent rubbing.

The TRX wheels do have some value to the restoration crowd, so I wouldn't just dump them. The issue with the TRX has been the limited tire options and the cost of tires for them. At this point with the new TRX replicas I don't see that gettting any better for TRUE TRX tires.

You can always post them for sale in the classifieds and see if there are any interested parties. Good Luck!

There are three options available to you:

These are the same rules that have been in effect nearly since time immemorial here, rewritten and rearranged for added clarity and efficiency.

    1. To post an ad to sell parts, you must meet one of the three conditions:

The board automatically prevents those who do not meet the above requirements from posting. Do not spam to try to hop up your post count, and please don't bother complaining about the post count issue. The requirement is occasionally waived when replying to a "wanted" ad (abuse this, however, and you WILL be booted from the Classifieds, or perhaps the whole site).

275.. wow! I'm running 255's on 17x9's and when the suspension is at its longest point in travel you couldn't fit a pencil between the shock and the rubber!

When the Ford "quailty" is added in, see my from the factory hood fitment below, things get dicey with a 4-eye and front tires.
Each car is different when we are talking about less than 0.1" clearance with tires. The tire make, the year made (there are differences) , the factory the tire was made at, and even the air pressure all come into play.

My 245/45/17 extreme performance summer tires just kiss the bottom of my fender opening. However, my 245/45/17 Blizzak snow tires scrape the the bottom of my fender opening at full turn. I can't use my extreme performance summer tires in temps below ~45F (If I want to live :-)). Fwiw, extreme performance summer tires have very poor traction in cold temperatures.
Fwiw, I've chosen the wheel spacers very carefully, after trying a bunch.

Yup, gotta love Ford's factory finish on body panels for Foxes.
