Default 1982 Four eye data from Ward's Automotive Yearbook

Our corporate library includes copies of Ward's Automotive Yearbook from 1974-1990. This book contain hundreds of pages of data gathered for the US market, including model specific data such as the percentage of factory installed equipment on a given model.

Since I'm looking for an '82 Mustang GT, I've gathered the data for that model year, but if there's enough interest, I could also provide a breakdown for other years (I only have access to print data, so I've got to manually load each year and model).

    Some notes before I begin:

    1) Ward's automotive tracked production data from September 1, 1981 to September 1, 1982. Therefore, the production numbers reported here may not match other published sales or production data.
    2) This information reports the percentage of each equipment type installed on ALL Mustangs- The data cannot be broken out by body type or trim level.
    3) I broke out engine transmission and brake data for both Mustangs and Capris. The remaining data is Mustang only. If there's interest in the data, Capri figures are available.
    4) The data only breaks out features by basic description- Because of this, it does not discriminate between 4.2 and 5.0 V-8s or C3 and C5 automatics.

With that in mind, here's the data-

    Production Numbers:

    Mustang- 119,314
    Capri- 31,696

(To calculate the total number of each feature, multiply these numbers by the percentages listed below)

    Engines:

    Mustang
    2.3 L Four- 45.7 %
    3.3 L Six- 28.8 %
    V-8- 25.5 % (Includes both 4.2 and 5.0 Liter)

    Capri
    2.3 L Four- 44.0 %
    3.3 L Six- 31.3 %
    V-8- 24.7 % (Includes both 4.2 and 5.0 Liter)

    Transmissions:

    Mustang
    Automatic- 51.0 % (Includes both C3 & C5)
    4 Speed- 43.6 %
    5 Speed- 5.4 % (Tremec 140 FS- 2.3 L ONLY)

    Capri
    Automatic- 52.0 % (Includes both C3 & C5)
    4 Speed- 39.3 %
    5 Speed- 8.7 % (Tremec 140 FS- 2.3 L ONLY)

It's interesting that the Capri used almost twice as many 5-speeds. Perhaps that's a reflection of the Capri's "European Heritage."

    Vehicle Equipment:

    Power Steering- 95.0 %
    Limited Slip Differential- 24.8 %
    Radial Tires- 100 %
    Aluminum Styled Wheels- 23.8 %
    Power Brakes
    Capri- 100 % (standard)
    Mustang- 94% (Manual brakes- 6%)
    Vinyl Roof- 2.2 %
    Sun Roof- 12.9 %
    T-Top Roof- 11.7 %

    Convenience Features:

    Tint Glass- 79.1 %
    Air Conditioning- 66.5 %
    Power Windows- 8.3 %
    Power Door Locks- 11.0 %
    Reclining Seats- 100 %
    Adjustable Steering Column- 20.1 %
    Cruise Control- 21.3 %
    Digital Clock- 31.9 % (Console)
    Rear Widow Defogger- 51.8 %
Rear Window Wiper- 6.3 % (Hatchback only)
    Remote Control Mirror
    Left- 100%
    Right- 70.3 %

    Radios*-
    AM- 14.5 %
    AM/FM Mono- 2.3 %
    AM/FM Stereo- 39.1 %
    AM/FM Stereo 8-Track- 1.8 % (8-track, Whoo Hoo!)
    AM/FM Stereo Cassette- 18.6 %

    * The radio percentages only add up to 76.3 %, but this wasn't unusual for the time. In some cases, dealers bought cars without a radio, and installed an aftermarket unit prior to sale.
