I did find an old thread discussing this question. At that time Mick (FoxChassis) said:
"Cars with a V-8 even got that hood sometimes. Depends on what the factory had in stock at the time when the cars were being built."

He may have additional info now, and maybe he'll chime in here, but the discussion was about turbo cars getting the hoods with the hole.

This is also a mid-year model. May 83

Congrats! Looks like a great little project. I like that picture of the "pony" leaving the "stable" that it's been sitting in for so long. That's cheesy, isn't it? Looking forward to the refurb.

Sweet! Looking at those pics, that paint ought to clean up and resemble the truck pulling it.

The snakeskin is nothing to worry about, but I'd give it a 50/50 chance the snake is still there....

So is that a good shifter knob with a short shifter? Good sign to having something done to the tranny, like stated.

Well, if the car was in a nice warm garage, he may have crawled out and found a better spot! Yikes! Car looks 10X better after just a spray down.

Default The Pony is sleeping? Well wake her up!

After taking up a bay at the local car wash for probably a good 20-30 mins, she is now clean enough to really start working on. PO said it was bored .30 with forged internals and a crane cam. Crane Cam stickers on the valve covers but lets hope there are parts inside. The son pulled all the plugs and fogged all the cylinders, drained all the oil and added new with a filter. He then pulled the distributor and with a 1/4 socket secured to an extension and a corded drill running CCW, we ran the oil pump to get fresh oil through it. PO included a new ignition module and after installing it and a coil we confirmed we had good spark. We tested and confirmed that just as the PO had claimed, the fuel pump was bad. Quickly swapped it out with a spare we had. Pulling fuel from a gas can she fired but the carb was not going to let it run. Swapped it out for another we knew was good and she fired up and smoothed out after a few adjustments. After nearly killing myself, we got the old tank drained and fresh fuel was flowing through the system again. Decided to swap out the 14" wagon wheels for a set of Ponys we had. The headliner material arrived today and so far I am very impressed with the quality of Stockinterior.com headliner kit. Started pulling out the interior for a proper cleaning and to get to the headliner. Only got a couple of pics but I think we will try to get a video tomorrow. She looks so much better and we haven't even touched the paint yet.

Turns out it is a Pro 5.0 shifter with a Ford Racing shift knob. I like it but I am going to go back to a stock T5 shifter I think.

Nice work! Someone really loved that car at one point. They changed out the column so they could use a better steering wheel, put a shifter on it, installed some engine mods it sounds like. That is a nice find and is going to turn out to be a terrific little project. I half wonder if it has an 8.8 under it.

Thanks!! I think that they did do a lot but the column is actually still the original 83 column. The 84 and later style steering wheel will fit. If I recall correctly, the change was in 83 (or early after 83 was in production-someone here will know . I know this is the 83 column still because the horn is on the turn signal lever. The dash bezel is 84 but it is being swapped out in favor of an original 83. I am pretty sure the rear end is still the 7.5.
