Default My New Fox Mustang Evolution Poster

    Hi Mustang enthusiasts,

My name is Andrew and I'm a worldwide car enthusiast from Australia, and a Ford man also.

Since 2012 I've been making illustrative car posters for enthusiasts around the world which I call model charts and evolution carts. You may have seen my work for sale on eBay and at uniquecarposters.com.

Please understand this post is not simply a "please buy my poster" advert as I genuinely like to connect with fellow car enthusiasts to make my posters the best they can be, and put a lot of passion and love into making them. Each one I make (and I've made about 250 in total now) is a big risk on my end due to the time and effort involved. Some have simply been failures after countless hours of work put into them!

In terms of the Ford Mustang, I've done evolution charts for the 64-66, 67-68 and 1969 models, but stopped there when poster sales started dropping significantly in 2015, and is still disappointingly low. One day I hope to do a 1970 model year chart and all the post-1970 models, but we'll see. My posters usually have introductory text blurbs at the top which discuss the introduction and development of the models, and each car has technical info about that model/year/changes.

So anyway, I've just yesterday finished my new 1979-1993 Fox Mustang evolution chart after three weeks of work in my spare time. You can see it here:

I originally made a Fox-body Mercury Capri evolution poster and someone saw it and suggested I should do the Mustang version as there would be a much bigger market for it. You can see the Capri version here:

You'll notice that the Mustang poster doesn't have a blurb of text at the top and that's because of the big number of models (24 Mustangs vs. 16 Capris) I felt I had to include. I am looking for some feedback on making the Mustang poster the best it can be. I've tried my best to study the history of the factory models and picked the ones which best represent changes over the years of its production, as well as a good spread of factory paint colours which were individually sampled.

Hope to get some constructive criticism back about it, many thanks in advance!

    Andrew.

Cool concept and welcome to the site!

Can you provide a link to a larger size? The text is to blurry to read after enlarging it in my browser.

    Thanks for your reply.

I haven't finished writing it yet. There is "placeholder" text in there at the moment. I spend the extra three days or so writing it all up when the first sale happens, otherwise it's just too much work with no guarantee of a sale, especially so with 24 cars to research (as opposed to the usual 16)! I worked out this system a few years back.

Forgot to list the models I selected:

    1979 Mustang
    1979 Mustang Ghia
    1979 Mustang Cobra
1979 Indy 500 Pace Car Replica
    1980 Mustang Cobra
    1981 Mustang Ghia Turbo
    1982 Mustang GL
    1982 Mustang GLX
    1982 Mustang GT
    1983 Mustang GT
    1984 Mustang LX
    1984 Mustang SVO
    1984 Mustang GT 350
    1985 Mustang GT
    1985 Mustang SVO
    1986 Mustang GT
    1987 Mustang LX
    1987 Mustang Cobra GT
    1988 Mustang Cobra GT
    1989 Mustang LX 5.0
    1991 Mustang LX 5.0
    1992 Mustang GT
    1993 Mustang SVT Cobra
    1993 Mustang SVT Cobra R

Thanks, that was corrected long ago. Seems I have an early proof of the poster image on my site, not the final version.

UPDATE: Have updated the Capri poster image with the final version.

Might want to find a way to include ssp versions.

I think a SSP State version would be cool.

The SSP and 7-Up versions were in my original list but had to go in order to fit in all the factory changes over such a long period.

Perhaps I can replace the regular models with limited/special/aftermarket editions for certain years, but then some people will want to buy the poster with a regular model representing a specific year because they have it (I also provide customisation so they can have their year and colour on it).

So I might have to make and provide two versions... one with regular models and one with the specials for specific years.

I like it. Maybe a coupe for 85 since you did a GT for 86, but that's just my worthless opinion.

I like it! It looks more thorough than similar type posters I've seen. I'd hang one in my garage for sure. If it goes to production let us know. +1 for what jessesandy said about 83 being a return of the factory Mustang convertible- maybe model a 83 GT Turbo convertible

Thanks for all the suggestions and feedback! I've decided to expand this poster up to 28 cars in order to fit in all the specials and more convertibles. Trying to work within a layout of 24 cars to represent everything is doing my head in! It's only the second time I've had so many cars on the one poster (the other one is the evolution of the Australian Ford Falcon GT).

The result of switching to 28 cars (see rough draft below) is that the cars are 9% smaller, there's a bit more horizontal space between cars and the text info under each car has been reduced to 3 lines including the label, but I can tinker with the character formatting to fit more text than what we see now.

Edit: Forgot to add, it seems Roush didn't make any original Fox body Mustangs, that was during the later Fox version, which hopefully I will do a poster for also, depending on the success of this one.

So here is my revised list:

    1979 Mustang
    1979 Mustang Ghia
    1979 Mustang Cobra
1979 Indy 500 Pace Car Replica
    1980 Mustang Cobra
    +1981 SVO-McClaren Mustang Turbo
    1981 Mustang Ghia Turbo
    + 1981 Mustang SSP
    1982 Mustang GL
    1982 Mustang GLX
    1982 Mustang GT
    1983 Mustang GT (make convertible)
    + 1983 Predator Mustang
    1984 Mustang LX
    1984 Mustang SVO
    1984 Mustang GT 350
    + 1984 Saleen Mustang
1985 Mustang GT (change to coupe)
    + 1985 Mustang Twister II
    1986 Mustang GT
    1987 Mustang LX
    1987 Mustang Cobra GT
    1988 Mustang LX
    1989 Mustang LX 5.0
    + 1990 7-Up convertible
    1991 Mustang LX 5.0
    1992 Mustang GT
    + 1992 Saleen Mustang supercharged
    1993 Mustang SVT Cobra
    1993 Mustang SVT Cobra R

Now I have to get busy over this week some time doing all the extra work to illustrate the additional special models.

I have yet to see your posters in person but Dave says they are GREAT! I sent him this link also. Just thinking out loud and since this is a 79-86 Fox body group Wonder how that would work and then do a 87-93 with special edition cars 7up,Saleen,SSP, etc to help fill in the space. Thanks for doing this and the Capri Posters

Don't do all 15 years of Fox Mustangs on one poster. Break it down to two different posters, one for 1979-86 and one for 1987-93.

19" x 13" is not large enough to fit 28 cars and a paragraph of text for each.

That's a good point. I didn't realise the two sub-groups were so separate in enthusiasts' eyes. We don't see many Fox Mustangs here in Oz!

So I've come up with these two new poster lists. I'll work on the 79-86 ones this week and post an update when I have something to show you.

    1979 Mustang

1979 Indy 500 Pace Car Replica

    1981 Mustang Ghia Turbo
    + 1981 Mustang SSP
    1982 Mustang GL
    1982 Mustang GLX
    1982 Mustang GT
    1983 Mustang GT (make convertible)
    + 1983 Predator Mustang
    1984 Mustang LX
    1984 Mustang SVO
    1984 Mustang GT 350
    + 1984 Saleen Mustang
1985 Mustang GT (change to coupe)

My 2 cents: you can cut down on a lot of cars that are basicly unchanged from year to year and get larger pictures, especially on the 87-93 poster. From '87 to '90 there are really only 5 different looks (LX notch, LX hatch, LX 'vert, GT hatch and GT 'vert) I like the inclusion of the ASC and the Roush 25th concept but dont see the point in having a GT hatch from every one of those years included. '91 LXs are unique being the last year for black mouldings and the first for the pony wheels so one of those should be on there but other than that, the special edition convertibles and the SVT Cobras '91-'93 were basically identical as well.

I guess my list of of Aero Stangs would look something like this:

1987 LX notch in Clove Brown (I think the color was phased out after '87)
    1987 GT convertible
    1988 GT T-top (last year for T-tops)
1988 LX convertible (maybe a 4 cylinder to represent the base cars?)
    ASC convertible
    1989 LX hatch
    Roush 25th concept
1990 7-UP convertible (only LX to get turbines)
1991 LX notch in Calypso Green (shows new color as well as the pony wheels and black trim)
    1992 spring special convertible
    1992 Saleen
    1993 Cobra
    1993 Cobra R
1993 GT hatch in Reef Blue ('93 only color)
    1993 Triple White convertible

So that's 15 for 3 rows of 5. If 4 rows of 4 is better for layout then you could get a SSP in there as well. Maybe find out what the last marked SSP built was and include that.

Thanks for that. One of the reasons some unchanged models reappear in different years is to show more paint colours, different options and also discuss changes which occurred during those years which might otherwise get skipped over. From what I quickly glanced on Wikipedia, there's a few things which changed over that time, and having those cars allows a more in-depth discussion of the changhes.

First year for SSP was 1982, not 1981, and only the California Highway Patrol (CHP) had them that year.

Art looks great! i look forward to seeing it larger with type.

I do feel a GT from every year as well as whatever specialty models should be represented. Except for the 87-93 GT, as they are all identical in image and description except for the change to the pony wheel in 91. Speaking of which, that 91 LX Sedan should have pony wheels.
