Default 82 GT Clone Coyote Build

Hi, my name is Drake. I have posted on here once or twice looking for help and always received support. I thought I would document my coyote build. I have seen amazing work on here that others have done and have been inspired and motivated and would like to participate. I will try to include as much actually useful information as I can although there will certainly be a lot of useless information to sort through

I started with this car when I was 14. It was a V8 conversion (72 or 73 basic 2 barrel with flat tappet cam) when I got it which helped with insurance. It was bolted to an FMX transmission (no overdrive). It had dual exhaust, 2.5" 3 chamber flowmasters. The interior was nice, it was not fast or pretty

An 82GT shell on ebay was used to swap body panels and a family friend worked with me to do the body work and paint it. Some pony wheels/tires were sourced from ebay and all was paid for with a construction job to make my first car presentable.

It was time for some mechanical updates. The engine was pulled/rebuilt with another family friend (bearings & rings) and some 289 hi-po heads were freshened and put on (my dad had), a mild ~500 lift camshaft and a bunch of add ons (springs, decking of the head, intake, carb, coil, roller rockers, gear drive, etc. etc.). The engine sounded good and ran well. The rear end had a set of 3.73s put into it as well and an aluminum driveshaft was added to the mix. The FMX made way for a unique but power robbing C6 that had a small block housing bell (another part my dad had) with a small 2000 stall converter.

The C6 was exchanged for a far lighter and more efficient C4 that had a reverse manual valve body, 3000rpm stall after more saving. This changed the car dramatically. It ran mid to high 13s in the quarter with a C4 transmission but was not close to the 12s hope that I had. Word of advice for anyone starting an engine build is to start with good heads and build the combination around that rather than to do it with a parts list.

My freshman summer year of college I worked for a commercial hvac company. I attended a welding trade school my final year of high school and decided to put those skills to some use. A S&W 6pt mild steel cage was welded in while the interior was out some of the damaged interior panels were re-painted. The battery was also relocated to the rear of the car. While the interior was being put back together

The car sat for a long time through college as a CRX served as a daily. The mustang developed numerous leaks that annoyed me to no end from sitting and age (trans cooler, power steering, rear main, rear end gasket, etc). I collected good used suspension/brake parts for corral/craigslist/classified with money I would make over the summer. Eventually I had enough parts by my senior year with a couple new purchases to may the swap. This included:
    Bilstein shocks/struts (used from corral)
    H&R race springs (51650.8
Maximim motorsports bump steer set (used from corral)
Maximum Motorosports caster/camber set (used from corral)
Flaming River manual rack (used from corral)
Steeda aluminum lower control arms (used from corral)
UPR boxed upper control arms (used from corral)
    Energy suspension bushings (4.18113)
Weld in Battle box torque box re-enforcements

Lastly for 2009 the C4 setup was traded for a tremec 3550 setup. The overdrive with the 3.73s was a huge improvement in RPM and gas mileage making the car more drivable. A pedal assembly was procured off ebay and some odds and ends were sourced locally.

At this point I had graduated college and started in the real world (2010) but was in an apartment with my soon to be wife and again it wasn’t a practical daily driver (still had my CRX). Eventually we moved into a house with a garage and finally could start to plan how to make this thing what I really wanted. I new I needed a better radiator than the copper one that I had and splurged on a BeCool radiator with new hoses.

    2011:
At this time the coyote was emerging in the new mustangs and I set my end goal around a clean, no leak, simple coyote swapped fox (already had the manual rack). My plan unfolded with first the brake swap (remember the ones I bought and have been saving). The brake set ended with a rear end re-build as well (you know, while your at it)

SSBC rear disk brake conversion (used off corral)
13” Bear big brake front kit (42610)
    Willwood manual master cyliner (260-9439)
    Line lock (1745000)
    Baer proportioning valve (2000035)
    SVO Adapter kit (MMBAK-2)
    Manual brake pedal kit (MMBAK-10)
    Moser 31 Spline Axles (A883141)
    Tru-Trac locking differential (TT70P52670)
    Ford 4:10 gears (M-4209-88410)
    TA girdle (1806)

Cleaned the rear end up with a wire wheel/sander. Painted it with some high zinc primer and VHT epoxy paint to finish it

Finish the gage cluster. Knowing I would have a hard time matching the coyote to the 1980 harness I went with auto meter gages and ordered a custom bezel from Micheal Croke who at the time was making them for the four eyes.

    2013:
Next up was a fuel system. The current engine was running a mechanical pump w/out regulator and had no potential to help the coyote. A system was selected that could run the 302 and keep it drivable until I could get the new motor.
Aeromotive 15 gallon stealth fuel w/ in tank pump (18664)
    Aeromotive regulator (13301)

Braided stainless steel lines and lots of fittings. I may have gone a little nuts. I didn’t want just to put the fuel cell in the spare tire well. Its not centered, it sticks out, its not well restrained. I took the liberty to fabricate my own fuel cell replacement for the spare tire well but had to build my own bench mounted sheet metal brake first. It was a lot of extra work but I think it came out pretty simple and clean.

Lastly a new K-member was identified to be needed for the swap. I see some people now are able to use the stock k-member but that’s ok. I ended up choosing an AJE (040-MU-40UM) really because theirs is modular with hit/miss reviews. It is capable of supporting the 302 that was still in the car with one set of mounts and then with just a mount change capable of supporting the coyote. This kept the car mobile and functional until I could save and get everything else together.

    2015
Long sway bar mounts (Local Pick a Part)
Windshield washer reservoir out of a SN95 (Local Pick a Part)
Radiator overflow reservoir (I dont remember where this came from and cant find documents)
    New end links (19-417-BL)

Since then I have been collecting parts for the swap. Its all the little things and the devil is in the details. Small things like bellhousing bolts or starter bolts just "get you". I assembled a list and stockpiled these parts until I ran out of small parts. Hopefully this helps someone else.
    Tremec bellhousing (M-6392-M46)
    bellhousing bolts (M7771A)
    Spec 26 spline clutch (SF5012)
    Clutch & dowel kit (M-6397-B46)
    AJE motor mounts (AJE-20)
    Moroso oil pan (MOR-20571)
    Stifflers transmission crossmember (TCB-M06)
    Alternator Kit (M-8600-M50BAT)
    Starter (M-1100-C50)
    Starter Bolts (HDW-11002E)
    Pedal Adapter (SVE-9729PB)
    Fuel Rail adapter (RUS 640853)
    3" J pipe stainless exhaust pipes (PVM3018-30)
3" ball and socket adapters (15925)
    Block Plate (M-7007-A)

Earlier this year (Jan) a coyote engine came onto craiglist that came out of a wrecked 2014 GT with ~13,000 miles on it asking $5500. I jumped on it as the guy was only 2 hrs away. I was able to get the engine with the H-pipe, cats, O2 sensors and AC compressor w/ hoses. The final round of purchases included:

Purchased the Control Pack Harness (M6017A504V)
    Ford Racing SFI Flywheel (M-6375-M50)

I sold the pushrod motor with the entire exhaust system and everything two weeks ago. With the proceeds a 3" back exhaust system from magnaflow was procured.

    3" catback Magnaflow system (16996)

Now to finally get this thread current and I applogize for many of the pictures. I have never put a build thread together and was not good about documenting it. Many pictures are not the final product but something along the way whenever I thought about it.

The flywheel, clutch, bell, alternator, starter and mounts were put onto the engine while it was on the ground

The front clip was removed to help avoid damage, enable a wire tuck and to smooth out the engine bay.

A section in the front passenger fender well was cut open to make a home for the ECU and holes were drilled for the ford controller distribution box.

This meant having to re-locate the fuel regulator whose location was poor planning on my part although it did look nice for the carb setup.

The flanges were cut off of the stock headers so that it would clear the tunnel and firewall right at the base of the weld.

The engine was lifted and swung into the bay. The motor mounts had to come back off to jocky the motor around. My previously made brake lines were in the way and had to be removed. Also I have found interference with the steering shaft that will have to be dealt with.

The floor pan on the drive side was massaged to open up clearance for the header and extension tube.

Now that's a long term build. Good work nonetheless. I look forward to the wiring of your mustang.

Thanks for the thread, It'll be cool to see it alive with the coyote.

Cool story and a great evolution over the years! Same woman from girlfriend to wife...and you still have time/money for cars No kids yet?

I've been trying to picture a 79-82 non-GT/Pace Car front with the cowl hood and your car started out like that when you got it. Thanks for the visual!

I like to see more pictures myself. I take lots of pictures; the digital age makes it so easy now so why not!

Thanks for posting. I look forward to seeing more.

I agree on the pics! More is better!
And I'll go ahead and say thank you for also providing part numbers along the way. Those will help out a ton for people that will one day want to tackle the swap (maybe me) and this one parts list is better than trying to search through Google on possible conflicting info on what is/isn't needed.

    Awesome project!

Totally impressed with the build. As previously mentioned, more pictures are better during a build thread. If you don't overload the thread with pics, details for others to use might be missed, visually. Darran is living proof that more pics are better.

Build threads with a low picture count are just stories.

Thanks for the comments and will post more pics. I hope the list helps someone else or at least saves time.

Ha, no kids yet. Next year which is why I have to get this done this year  and have been very fortunate. My wife has been with me for almost 12 years and is very patient.

I have already found that the stock coyote oil pan works fine with the AJE k member so you can save some money if you go that route. I still plan on using the moroso one since I already have it and bought it long ago.

I started wiring the ECU this week. First I am impressed. The control pack is ready to handle the fuel pump, fan and alternator. Totally stand alone just need to wire it in.

I cut a hole in the front fender well bottom for the ECU after some goggling.
