Default What is the Best sounding exhaust for a 1986 v6 Mustang?

I am trying to get a more aggressive exhaust sound in my 86 mustang v6 convertible. So far I have tried a thrush glass pack muffler and that makes it sound like junk. Now I have a thrush welded muffler which sounds no different. I am considering a flowmaster 40 series but need opinions or recommendations first.

I found a relatively cheap used 2.5" BBK H-pipe and Flowmaster mufflers (series?) exhaust with chrome tails for a 2.8 V6. We took the recommendations of some of the gurus on the manifold outlet pipe diameter length and relative H location for better tuning. There is a lot of info (mainly 2.8 related but may apply) starting here: http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthre...=1#post1753059

We are happy with the overall sound so far (note this V6 is a little different than the 3.. We still need to install another restrictor in this system further away from the engine at one of the flanges. The 2.5" is still too large to maintain the velocity and there is a bit of a drone around the 3-3500 rpm range; bang on around 100km/h so I wouldn't want to go on highway trip without ear plugs in it

Fordhorsemen also has duals on a 2.8 V6. He ran custom bent true 1-3/4" duals straight back from the manifold with no H or X and Turbo mufflers. http://vb.foureyedpride.com/showthre...=1#post1754123

Wow - very impressive sound considering it's a V6 - especially from the second one!

Most V6 setups just sound like a bunch of angry bees stirring around in a fart can to me. This sounds nothing like that.

But what about the horsepower and torque..... Ever heard the buzz of a turbo barely spinning on one of those setups? You have a great note now. Bets are it would sound cooler than 99.9% of the factory turbo V6 setups we've all heard. Not that I'm suggesting messing with a nice N/A four eyed V6.....

Ranger? There nobody would be upset...

    Cough, cough...solid lifter

Fordhorsmen has also upgraded to the Offenhauser 4 BBl intake and the Holley 390 set up already also. I am not sure about his cam though.

In the Tangerine car, that's the factory cam and 2150 2 bbl carb (with a little porting ).The tuning restrictors we need to add should help in the future for the tone. We do have some plans for the Tangerine 2.8 in the future. We have the same intake and carb combo ready for install one day and at that time we will be getting a cam upgrade also. These things will scream

Should pull hard to 5000 or so and have about 200lb/ft just off idle

Here's what I did on a 90's Thunderbird and Cougar with the 3.8. I left everything stock from the manifolds to the cat and from there split it into 1 1/2" duals out the back. At idle, it had a low rumble and when you got on it, it had a nice even mellow tone without sounding obnoxious like a fart can. It's hard to explain but for a V-6, it sounded healthy but not ricer...it doesn't have a V-8 sound either. Also had little to no drone at any RPM. Try it. It's a cheap experiment where you are only out some bent pipe and not mufflers which get expensive fast during experimentation. IIRC, it cost me $75 to have a muffler shop do it.

The last(and only v6 mustang of mine that I drove) I did the bodywork first then did the necessary v8 swap a year later. I bought a 2 1/2" Flowmaster catback and just installed one side of it. Drove it for a summer like this. It sounded pretty good. Then when I was ready I did my swap and added the other side.

I split the exhaust after the factory cat and ran a cheap set of turbo mufflers with dumps on mine for years. People constantly thought I had a v8 and it set off car alarms in parking garages like no body's business.

    Here's mine :

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KHFNjyPOek

It's a cheap Walker SoundFX muffler with a new tail pipe. No cat (export model), original intermediate pipe, and everything is factory original. It really does sound like a V8 in town when the sound reverbs. I love it.

But you V6 is very different than the Cologne V6, so it won't sound the same.
