    Pardon my ignorance guys but, what is the charcoal canister for?
    what happens if one of the hosesof it no longer exists?

    If the line to your tank is plugged off, you'll get a popping or venting when opening the gas cap. Even without the emissions solenoids I have my vent line hooked to a cannister, it cuts down on fumes and the tank can 'breathe' or vent. Without it, the gas tank is getting sucked in as the gas leaves....like it's under vacuum.
