Granted, we use vapor recovery nozzles here, but with those, any spitting back will cause the nozzle to
shut off, and THAT would just piss me off.
Yeah, that's what it does. And goes all over the ground out the little drain on the plastic liner at the top of the filler neck (that's why i thought there was a leak somewhere in the past, but that simply can't be true). You can see why I find this unacceptable. I wonder why yours don't do that though. Just have to complicate things don't you?

Brian, all i can figure is the difference must be your 255 lph pump vs. my 88 lph pump. I have to cycle over and over and over. I am swapping in a 190 during this project though.

I'm sure yours is happy to fire right up though too because it happens to be tuned properly. That's a ways off for mine.

Couple of month old thread, but wondering what happened? Get it figured out?

Came across this while researching for my Dad's 78 Fairmont with the 347 stroker that we are about to convert to fuel injection using the Holley Sniper throttle body on the Victor Jr intake.

Questions> How far up the filler neck that you are using is it split? Is the original 78-79 filler neck divided like that too?

And, as far as adapting other necks to the car, if it isn't divided all the way up, couldn't you cut a section out and replace it with fuel filler hose so that you can adjust the length and angle to make a non-original neck fit the car?

Well, I answered one of my questions, found the original filler neck from my 79 Zephyr, and it is divided just like the others.

I didn't remember it having the flapper in the opening where the fuel nozzle fits in, this creates an issue for me on the fuel injection conversion.

I had wanted to drill the filler neck to put the fuel return fitting into it so I didn't have to put it in the tank directly.

This is where we're at. A fitting has been welded on to the filler neck.

This is where it sits in the car.

I plan to replace the filler neck to body seal and then run the hose through the body with a grommet instead of how it is here. I haven't been to the gas station with it yet, so I don't know that it's fixed quite yet. All I've done so far is add some fuel using a gas can, and that seemed to go well. I should know soon if this was a good solution or not.

I did end up with the Mustang filler neck, which is split all the way up. Despite the difference in length and angle, it seems to fit well enough. I think you'll want it split the whole way like it is, or you might run into problems filling like I've had. As for what to do about a return line, if I were doing it today and didn't have the option of the LTD wagon tank and the no longer available sender, I'd go with a kit like this from Holley.

Pricey, but really simplifies things. You don't have to buy a different tank or anything.

For me, I'm trying to do without removing the tank.

Can you get the filler neck out without removing the tank?

Maybe. I'm not sure, I've never tried. If you're determined and twist and turn it just right, maybe....

By the way, I was just looking at your gallery, and you've got a sweet couple of F/Zs there! Did you used to be on Ford Forums or Fairmont302?

Just here and the Corral and the houston local westsidemustangs.com.

Wish I still had the Zephyr, but it's long gone.

Does the box inside the fender at the top of the filler come out without tearing it up?

If that comes out then I should be able to get the neck out, at least looks like it in your pics. I don't have the car handy, it's at my Dad's house and he's in the hospital right now.

    I'm sorry to hear that.

It does come off, but it is still on the neck because the flange on the neck is on the outside.

Ah, okay, thought the neck flange butted up to the back side of the box. So, it will slide out the door after unbolting from the box, right?

The filler door? That would still be pretty hard to do, given all the angles and stuff. The neck and box would probably still have to come out together. I don't think unbolting it from the box would even help with getting it out.

    Well, I'll find out.

    Started the conversion today.

It will come out if you unbolt it from the box AND unbolt the box.

Alright, I finished the re-arranging and here's what we've got.

I've pumped 5 straight gallons without the gas pump clicking off twice now. I think the problem might just be solved!
