Thread: 4r70w problems

    Default 4r70w problems

First of all I know this isn't a mustang but I was hoping that I could find some answers for my problem here. I have a 95 f150 with a 4r70w that I've been having some problems with. When it first started it would stall the motor when I came to a stop, a lot like a manual trans would do if I didn't push in the clutch. Now it will kick into neutral and slam back into drive at random times. It doesn't matter if I'm driving down the highway or leaving from a stop. What could be causing this? Is it the trans or possibly something else? The trans doesn't slip and I've never had any problems with it until now so if it's just a part that has gone bad that is reasonably easy to replace I would prefer to do that than get a questionable junk yard trans. Any help would be appreciated.

Weird. I only see the word "motor" in your original post, but it looks like the whole post is in this quote. Anyone else have this going on?

Not sure it's relevant but years ago we had a Chev Calvalier auto that would stall out when coming to a stop. Turned out to be a soleniod for the OD malfunctioned and would not disengage IIRC.

I didn't change the color. On my desk top the background is black with a light text but on my phone the background is light with black text. I posted this off of my phone which has the light background with black text. I'm assuming that's is what happened. Either way I apologize.

Sounds like torque converter clutch solenoid failure. There's a clutch inside of your torque converter that locks up when cruising and after 3rd and 4th gear shift above 40 ish MPH with the stock computer tune. When the TCC solenoid begins to fail, it'll sometimes keep the clutch engaged when coming to a stop. the neutraling out and slamming back into gear when moving could be signs of a failing one way roller clutch or low fluid (which sounds unlikely). If the torque converter is coming apart internally, it could also stay locked. Next time it stays locked when coming to a stop, try shifting it into manual 1st. In this position, the valve body will not allow the torque converter to lock hydraulically. If the torque converter stays locked anyways, it is broke. If the torque converter has failed, there could be debris that has been pumped into other parts of the transmission, causing it to neutral out.

I assume that you have verified that the transmission fluid is up to the proper level? When is the last time the fluid has been changed? How much mileage on the transmission?

I'm late to the party here but if you are still having this issue with the 4R70W I would replace the MLPS. Common failure on these transmissions & will cause the neutral symptoms. Relatively cheap compared to a rebuild.
