Default Cleaning up the old 351W

Since the engine has to come out anyway, and it's closing in on winter, I figured I might as well give the old girl a fresh coat of paint. She was first painted almost 20 years ago, so it's over due. A re-paint, and a sweet aftermarket serpentine pulley kit are in the works. Name: image.jpg

Ported Performer RPM heads 202/160's, and intake, with IIRC, a 296/302 duration cam. With the 1 3/4" full length headers, it dynoed at 452 at the flywheel. I've since gone with 1 5/8" shortys after having tranny trouble and after a couple of times of pulling the trans, I said screw that. I'll eventually put the full lengths back in at a later date. The drag days are gone, so if it dropped to 400ish, who cares.

Now it's time to rob the old 5.0 timing chain cover. I have one from an SN95, but don't feel like messing with an electric fuel pump right now. Name: image.jpg

Well, scratch that idea. Three broken bolts later, it came off. After examining the covers, they appear identical, with the exception of the dipstick hole, and the timing marker. That worried me. So, I'll clean up the old cover, tap the dipstick hole for a pipe plug, and call it good.

That's how I plugged the dipstick hole in my timing cover.

The cover for the sn95 uses a different water pump and it's shorter as well and the pump pulley won't match up with the crank pulley.

After a few hours of using a wire brush, it was time for spraying the intake with Aluma Blast. This should protect the intake for a long time. I hit the new water pump as well. Just waiting on the timing chain cover to come back. In the meantime, it's time to spray the heads. I'll also add, I'm thinking of spraying the block black as I think with the aluminum pulleys, and nice shiny aluminum, it will really stand out. Thoughts?Name: image.jpg

    Good luck

I say go for it! IMHO.....the green block is hideous, especially with all of the nice things you are doing to this ride.

    Your engine, your choice..

Keep it clean, repaint it black if its a Windsor 351, paint the rest of the car in Renault green....

Well, the original 83 timing cover is back on. I gave it to the BIL, and it came back clean, and all three broken bolts came right out. It's awesome having someone that deals with this type of stuff everyday. Name: image.jpg

I'm going to pick up some Aircraft Stripper, and strip the block down, and am torn between POR15, and good old primer, and high heat rattle can paint. The paint on it lasted for 20 years in just a barn. I now have a temp controlled environment so it should hold up just fine. Heck, I put new rotors on last February, and they still look new.

I had to buy a new timing cover for mine. It came out of an Engine Quest box. I think you're better off using an oem cover. The casting flash in the water ports was pretty bad, I basically did a port job with a carbide burr and some sanding rolls. It also has the front dip stick hole that I'm going to pipe tap 1/8" npt and plug.

Right now is probably a good time to throw a new set of valve springs and valve seals in it. I'd probably be inclined to take a lot at the bearings too. One of these would probably look pretty killer with the new serpentine setup too:

Kleen strip huh? I'll have to try that. I haven't had great luck with Tal-strip aircraft stripper in the past.

I brushed it on, walked away, and the stuff melts off. I did do it twice, as there was a little stubborn paint left. Then I cleaned it, and shot it with Easy Off and wiped the cast iron clean. I'll follow it up with brake cleaner, minerals spirits, and my final prep of alcohol.

I'm just torn on Black, or Red paint. Leaning black.

I second this answer. I will probably just go black with mine when I redo it, but then again I have a tan car so I'm limited in my choices without making the motor look like an afterthought eyesore.

Am I looking at that right and the oil filter mating and internal filter oil contact area is also painted? I dunno about you but I don't think I would personally paint that area moving forward. Seems like a bad place for paint........
