Thread: 79 cobra build

  1. #1

    Default 79 cobra build

Well I suppose this counts as the start to my build thread. Harvesting frame rails from 87 vert. Also put the h pipe and factory headers onto my cobra from the donor car. Cobra had one manifold with the remnants of an o2 sensor hanging out of it and the other side had some back woods wire and cherry bomb hanging off of it. Actually the start was the year process of getting a title for it. Po wouldn't give it to me. Then installing correct master cylinder and adding new brake lines till they didn't explode when the brakes were applied. Which brings us back around to today.

...and with exhaust on it I'm also shopping for an engine too. She's got the rattle. You know the 2000rpm no load bottom end rattle. Also, this will not be a show car. It's just to far past that. That said I'm trying to keep it close as I can but leaving room for improvements, either creature, or financial considerations. So advice is always welcome, as well as criticism. My skin is thick, plus there may be a beter way that one of you knows better than me. So let me have it. Oh by the way, this is currently a parts gathering adventure. I will move the cobra inside "sorry honey" this winter to do the frame rails and engine bay. Hopefully cruising next summer

Looks like a cool project. Nice to see another Iowan on here. I live in Grimes, only about 30 minutes away. I've got two '80's, so I'm always searching for parts locally. Let me know if I can help you track anything down.

I didn't know there was anyone here that close. Need to go to mp whatever kart track. Those are a blast. Never done the electric ones though.

Looks like quite a project but glad to see you saving it. Looking forward to the build. What're the original colors on it?

Size: 197.6 KBThe cobra is originally a red 5.0 auto red interior console cruise with hood decals. Going to get a TBD injected 5.0 roller, t5 and enough love to park at the local shows and drive it and get door dings. It's actually pretty solid for its age, I'm not sure why someone sprayed grey primer all over it The front frame rails seam to be the worst

A trove of new parts for my cobra build. 5.0 w/ harness and pcm, t5, 5 bolt conversion, some good front seats that I hope to recover to match the rear cobra butt holder and I'm sure a few others. Plus all sorts of stuff to sell to recoup my purchase

That'll make a nice donor vehicle. If you need any body parts, let me know. I've got an 80 hatchback that I bought as a parts car recently, it's about to go to the scrap yard. If there is anything you want me to pull off before it goes, let me know, you can have it. Good glass, trim pieces, stuff like that.

Thanks to 5.0 notch back for being a strait up guy and letting me haul off his 80 to the scrapyard. Meeting was exactly how it should go. Good guys on here!

So, update on big orange. Someone had cut the coil, bracket and connector off. As well as taking all the fuses and relays. So I "borrowed " a coil, plug and bracket from the closest ford, a 90ish 6 cyl f150. I bolted it on twisted the wires together and filled the fuse and relay center. Cranks but won't start. Damn. Traced back to a bad fuel pump with the help of some wire diagrams on the Google-net. Stole a pump from a spare tank I had and created a franken-pump. And VIOLA. lift off! It runs smooth no smoke and no check engine light. Sooooo I couldn't help putting some black circles in the parking lot. Studded snow tires and all. Now to tear it apart for its new home, between the to-be-new frame rails of my cobra

Nice project. Looks like you have a good start with all the parts that you are stashing. Look forward to more updates.

Size: 116.7 KBthis is what I'm up against. I'm gonna try to get the engine trans and k member off this weekend and get it leveled up and prepped for surgery . Meanwhile other stuff is out to the blaster and for powder coat. Plus new parts are stacking up on the shelves.

Does anyone have an opinion on front control arms, blast and powder coat old ones push a new balljoint in and add urethane bushings, or, new arms with new rubber bushings and balljoints.

I guess I should add for a street driver, not a track car. Also I have poly bushings in the rear, with rubbers on top

Size: 102.7 KB wife said "no mustang tonight" boy said" I wanna work on the mustang" mom says "dad, go work on the mustang". Funny how that works. Picking up powder coated k member axle housing and parts this week. Car is almost void of anything under it and engine bay is degreased and clear of anything that will interfere with frame rail replacement
