Thread: 1980 hatchback

    Default 1980 hatchback

I picked this car up as a parts car. The title is sketchy, but I think I can get it put in my name with a little work. I only wanted the hood, high back seats, and rear end out of the car, but the more I got to looking at it, the more I though it was worth saving. The car has an awful respray done to it and the interior had been resprayed too. The guy I bought it from pulled a v8 out of it, but I don't think it was original to the car. I've got tons of good parts, and a motor that I can put in the car. If I can get the title straightened out, I'm gonna put her back in the road.

The original color is orange, I think bittersweet? I'd like to put it back to the original color.

Today I tore out the interior. It was originally orange, but someone sprayed the entire interior black. I mean everything. Seats, carpet, dash, headliner, seat belts. They really went through a lot of work, I bet it was done 15-20 years ago as is shows its age. It had some high backs that I don't think are original to the car. The back seat looks like orange vinyl sprayed black. The front high backs look like they came from another car cause the vinyl seems to be black.

High backs, these will go in my notch. The notch's low backs will go in this hatch.

The carpet was shot. Spray painted ,like I said. The back seat isn't in bad shape.

Hatch area solid. The interior panels are trashed, not to mentioned peeling paint. I will need to find new ones. Do aero car interior panels interchange with the four eyes? If so I met have a better chance finding a pair, I hope that's not frowned upon.

I tore out all the carpet, interior panels and seats. Dash will need a new pad, but is pretty good otherwise. Someone jacked up the radio hole unfortunately. I have a lot of interior stuff that I will be able to throw in this vehicle. I think I can save the door panels, if I can find the hatch area interior panels I will have about everything.

I found a floor board crack in the usual spot. Right under the driver seat. This is nearly identical to the one I had in my notch.

Both rockers have some rot and their is rust around the rear wheels. Other than that, the body is very solid. Subframes are solid and straight.

If I get the title straightened out, I will throw the interior back together and drop a motor and trans in it. I've got a five speed I could use, but it had an automatic, so I don't know what I will do there. Then, I will do some back yard body work, throw some ten holes on, and paint it orange. I'm not going to put a ton of effort in the body, cause it would become a money pit real quick. I already have one of those. I would just like to do this fox some justice, get it back on the road, and make it look nice from 20 feet away at 20 mph.

So, I found some paint that I think I am going to use if I get the title figured out. It looks like a pretty good match. I wiped clean one of the door jams, where it is still the original color, and sprayed a little spot. I sprayed below where my finger is, above is the original.

Tore the front clip off yesterday. Looks like the car bottomed out really bad once upon a time because the rocker flange was smashed on each side near the fenders.

A little hard to tell in this picture, but the fuel lines were smashed along with the rocker flange on the drivers side.

The radiator support is smashed up at the bottom, but no rust surprisingly.

The front nose is in real good shape, no tears, a little deformation at the bottom.

Found one little nasty spot under the drivers side fender. There is some rot where the rocker joins with the firewall.

The fenders aren't terrible, but not worth saving. I've got an extra set to use if I get the title.

One the previous owners didn't take much care of their tools. I found 6 sockets, a combination wrench, a busted off flat head screw driver, and a 3/8" craftsman ratchet!

You are a brave soul! It looks a little crusty to me, must have spent it's whole life up here. With the crust and the title issues, it might be nothing more than a parts car. I'm not sure about Iowa, but Nebraska makes it almost impossible and unaffordable to get title issues resolved....been there done that once.

Either way, good luck with it and hopefully it will satisfy your needs friend.

BTW, how's the notch coming along? Hopefully it is not in the same position and condition it was the last time I was over there and saw it. I'm hoping to have a few issues resolved with my GT by this weekend and with luck I will be over by Des Moines with it for a show Sunday.

Who you calling crusty, Brock?! Haha, I know she ain't much to look at, but I just want something to fulfill my burnout fix, and so Camaro owners have some nice taillights to look at. This won't be a restoration by any means. I've just been looking for a beater to have some fun with while I meticulously deal with my notch.

Speaking of the notch, it hasn't come very far. Mostly collecting parts. I'm trying to make the notch as nice as I can, so I have a lot of "good" parts that aren't good enough for my notch. So, instead of trying to sell them, I'll just repurpose them in the hatch.

As far as the title goes. I have it, it was just signed in the wrong spot when the owner before me bought it. I need to talk to the DOT and see if it can be used. If not, I'm just going try to get the guy to get a duplicate and sign it over to me.

Where is the car show? I'd like to check out your GT.

Title is going to be a pain in the ass and the previous owner seems uncooperative. I also found this when I dug into the rockers...

What is that you ask? Why it's an Iowa license plate that I found when I cracked off a 2" thick chunk of filler(not sanded or even hardened, really) that was plastered along the drivers side rocker. Let's dig deeper, shall we?

Ohhhh, wtf? I'll give the guy a little credit for resourcefulness (not really) on using the license plate, but just shoving crunched up pop cans in there? That's some of the most absurd body work I've ever seen.

When I was done digging, this is what I came up with.

So, this was what they were attempting to cover up, I have to believe some fiberglass would have done a far superior half-assed job.

So, with all that being said, she's going to the yard. Such a shame, I really do love that color, but this is a money pit waiting to happen.

Rest in piece, you bittersweet beauty.

    Speechless...

It doesn't even look like an old "repair", those cans look recent.

It was originally a Turbo car so the rear end should be a 3.45.

Holy Balls! That's insane! Proof that some people should never be allowed to even touch a car. I have done some less than stellar work before but dang....I would have at least filled the rockers full of empty beer cans! LOL!

I had a feeling that is was going to be gruesome. It looked oddly crusty in spots in the other photos.

This car needs to be put down gracefully finally after all of that suffering.

    Rust in Pieces poor car.

Hey I got an idea! Now that you have a spare nose and assorted parts, maybe you can pick this one up and give her a nose job.

    Isn't "A" the code for the turbo 2.3L and "Y" the code for the N/A 2.3L ?

But you're right about the rear end, I didn't check the code on the door tag, but "Y" is 3.08.

Here is the information I have on it. Not very knowledgeable about the code stuff. The year-end was an 8.8 from a later model anyways, not original to the car.

1980 was the only year that the VIN code was the same for the NON-Turbo and Turbo engines. So you have to look at something other than the VIN code to know if the original engine was Turbo or NON-Turbo. You have to look at the Buck Tag or Build Sheet or Window Sticker, or a Marti Report or an Eminger invoice.

This car is a 1980 and it has an A in the VIN and an A on the Buck Tag so that means it was a NON-Turbo 2.3L.

If it were an A in the VIN and a T on the Buck Tag it would have been a Turbo 2.3L.
