    Default 1983 Mustang GT Hatchback T-Top Project/Build

I'm assuming these threads are inherently made for some entertainment, so I'll start with a little background on myself and this project. I grew up with a love of all things Ford, and especially a love of Mustangs. Most of this spawned from my father being a Ford mechanic who still works at a Ford dealership to this day.

When I was 15 I managed to save enough money to buy my first car,a 1986 Mustang LX Convertible 3.8L V6. It had a blown head gasket, but that's the beauty of having a mechanic for a dad.

Of course as a young kid I was a little disappointed that it was not a 5.0L, but it was what I could afford. That said, the old 86 was subject to the wear and tear of a new teenage driver, and eventually I sold her to buy a newer commuter car when I started college.

A number of years later after college, jobs, starting a family etc.. I decided to ditch the motorcycle I could no longer find time to ride (can't throw a 4yr old on the back and go down the road) and look for that 5.0L fox that I always wanted.

I found a number of local foxes that always seemed to be way to rough. I can handle mechanical issues, especially with support from my father, but when it comes to body work that is just something I'd prefer to stay away from. I happened to mention my interest to a co-worker one day at work, and I got a surprising response. "Well, I know where there is an 83 Mustang in great shape that you can buy. My dad has one he has been off and on trying to sell." I took this with skepticism, but asked for his dad's information and contacted him regarding the Mustang.

The following photos were some of what I received.

The photos and conversation with the gentleman intrigued me enough to make a 4 hour drive north to check out the car.

Some of the other information I obtained through conversation:

    • ~117,000 miles
    • Had a fairly recent engine rebuild
    • mild cam
    • headers
    • dual exhausts
    • 5spd Tremec transmission installed
    • Heat and AC no longer worked
    • Very limited body rust, nothing beyond mild surface rust
    • Some modifications that made it more resemble the aero mustangs

So I went to check her out, and after a look-over, a drive, and some more conversation. I decided to bring her home.

It was about this same time I had stumbled onto these forums and begun reading all the wealth of knowledge that has been put out there. One of the first things I did was get a Marti report on the car to get a bit more background.

I was also given a literal box of documentation on the car. I don't have any pictures of this but I am the fourth owner of the car and every previous owner had saved most if not all of the car's paperwork. More on what I learned from that in the next post.

The box of documentation was a fun read through on the cars history. I think my father enjoyed it even more than I did seeing the old car pamphlets, warranty card, window sticker, and "Space Age Rust-proofing" certificate.

Cross-referencing dates from receipts and other paper work the car had undergone a substantial engine rebuild at about 98,000 miles in 1998. Block machining, new forged pistons, cam, lifters, roller-rockers, water/oil/fuel pumps, etc. And the majority of the additional miles on the car had been accumulated 1-2years after the rebuild and the car had basically been parked up until I found her. The gentleman I bought her from would take a drive around the block and keep her in good running order, but that was about it.

So, I decided to drive her as she was for the first summer and see how it went. My kids enjoyed it and so did I.

During that time period I decided to start making the first of my personalized modifications. I missed the old turbine GT rims that I had on my original mustang, and since the rims on the car had already been modified and the car needed new tires I tracked down some local turbines and restored them for use. I had to repaint the center caps due to scuffs and scratches, and I stripped the rims down to remove the yellowing clear. Overall they turned out surprisingly well for what I paid for them. It's also worth a mention that the aftermarket rims that were put on the car had a bad offset, and would rub in hard turns even with a 215 tire on them. This also played into why I wanted new rims on the car.

As I drove the car through last summer I started to notice issues. All of them seemed to stem from the car being parked so long with little to no driving being done. Seals around the engine began to open up, and I started to see leaks of various types. The power steering rack was one of the main offenders, along with oil leaks around the intake manifold and rear main seal.

I also had an instance of the car dying in the middle of a family outing and not wanting to restart. After many restart attempts this ultimately led to a carb fire, and getting my father to come out and help me get the car towed back home.

At this point was the time I started to make plans for a teardown of different portions of the car for rebuild and customization.

One high point last summer was getting to take my boy to his first car show which was a ton of fun.

Once winter hit was time to start the teardown. Unfortunately for me, I had been reading way too much here in the forums so I had lots of ideas of what I wanted to do. One of the major things was disassembling the engine to replace all the seals/gaskets and upon reassembling improving the top-end.

With improvements to the top end comes increased horsepower and torque so I also wanted to upgrade the cars rearend and rear suspension. Fixing the AC and heat, cleaning up the interior, and undoing some of the owners previous mods were all on my to do list as well.

So I started simultaneously tearing apart the different areas of the car that I wanted to improve/modify, as well as acquiring parts.

Interior removal in order to pull the dash and replace the heater core, evaporator, and remove the home of a previously unwanted guest.

While doing this tear out the headliner fell from the ceiling, and I got a closer look at the wear and tear on the various plastic pieces in the car had seen. Restoring those pieces got added to my list of things to do.

Replaced the heater core and evaporator and got the box reinstalled behind the dash.

Was not a fan of the blue stripe on the car, and was also curious of what lie beneath it. I also did not enjoy the cheese grater taillights from the aero mustangs.

I was pleasantly to surprised to find the original double pinstripe lurking below, but it was showing its age on the front bumper and one of the side moldings must of have been replaced as I had to restripe it to match.

The second owner, who was responsible for most of the cars mods from what I can tell, also had some horses etched in the rear quarter glass, as well as "Pony-1" etched along the top of the windshield. The windhield has a small crack and I'll eventually need to replace it, but have not done anything with that. Replacing the windshield will get rid of the "pony-1" etching, but the horse etchings, which aren't even the mustang symbol, I decided to take care of while I had the interior out.

Next up was taking care of the felt weather strips along the front and rear of the t-tops that had worn down to reveal a nice orange rubber piece. This meant removing the t-top front and rear trim pieces and the t-top seal.

I put the new felt weather strips onto the front and rear trim pieces and they are waiting to back on.

As I worked on the weather strips I continued along with the engine pull and tear down. I also made progress on removing the rear end.

You are making a lot of progress on the Mustang! Way to go!

Definitely like the De-Aerofication of the car. Looks much better IMHO.

Oh! I was also going to say the if you have the car in a weather tight area and you plan on replacing the windshield anyway, removing the glass now makes installing the dash a much easier task!

I found a local 8.8 rear end out of an 88 mustang. It need some cleanup and refreshing.

Great point on the windshield. I'll need to do that sooner rather than later.

I managed to find some Trickflow 170s still in box and a Edlebrock performer RPM intake manifold from local sellers at good prices.

I do have to admit my own mistake and ignorance on some of my plans. I had been assuming I could use the roller rockers that were on the engine with the new heads and setup. Well I quickly discovered that the Dove roller-rockers that were on the stock heads were pedestal mount, and that they were incompatible with the new heads. So a bit of a speed bump there, and I had to figure out a stud mount roller rocker setup. Overall it was a good learning experience, although a bit expensive of a learning experience.

After that issue was solved it was time to clean up the engine surfaces and get her put back together.

WOW! Awesome progress! Great to see you making that car even better! That car would look soooo sweet with a new set of the TRX 16" rims...IMO.

After getting the top end back together I went ahead and flipped it over, cleaned up the block the best I could and put some paint on it.

So I mentioned above that I had a carb fire, and of course I'll probably never live than down with my wife or some of my other family members. That said, it was about this time that I found out my wife and parents had conspired to get me gift.

So back to some rear end work. I had pulled the break lines off of my 7.5 rearend, and, as was suggested in my readings here, they were a direct swap onto the new rearend.

I also had been looking for a set of 3.73 gears but stumbled on to set of Ford 3.55s very close to home at a price that was too good to pass up. Overall, I'll be doing a fair amount of cruising and some interstate so I'm thinking the 3.55s will work well for me based on the RPM/Speed/Gear Ratio information I've looked at.

Time to start the rear end assembly.

Next up rear control arms and rear end installation.

I decided to go ahead and upgrade the rear control arms while this was in process. The originals weren't very pretty, and it looked like it might be a pretty lengthy process to move the slapper bars from the 7.5 and/or add quad shocks.

I went with some BBK upper and lowers.

So in between the engine and rear end work I spent some time in the evenings cleaning up interior plastics. I decided to paint some of the rougher pieces and they turned out really well. So of course I had to buy more paint and keep going. Can't have mismatched interior pieces

I do have to say that the interior paint from NPD is far superior to that of the stuff LMR offers. I've used paint from both online stores and the SEM paints from NPD have superior coverage and go further.

At this point I have one more rear interior piece and the center console left to paint, and I have done every piece on interior plastic.

Should be able to start getting the interior back together after I paint some of the exposed areas of the dash.

I'm in limbo for a bit bit waiting on parts at this point.

Still trying to decide what I'm going to do with the front seats. They were replaced at some point, and I'm trying to find a path to some sport buckets that match the rest of the car. Will share once I decide what avenue I'm going.

Pulled the old carpet out of the car. The floor pans had some minor surface rust that I cleaned up and painted over with some por-15.

I also installed a steeda tri-ax short throw shifter. Sadly I forgot to take pictures of this work, but it was pretty straight forward on the Tremec 3550 that is currently in the car.

I've also made some headway on getting the Holley Sniper EFI system installed. I had pulled the gas tank and cleaned up and painted a few spots of surface rust on the tank.

I heavily leveraged the perfect size of my 7-year old's hands to help me install the return to tank line that came with the Holley Master system.

After cleaning out the fuel tank I was then able to get the tank back into the car.

The current plan is to use the original 5/16 fuel line as the return line, and use the 3/8in line provided in the master kit as the feed line.

    More to come.

So started the interior reinstall. My $20 Black Friday TMI headliner is up, but still needs to be trimmed and glued. Also put in the pieces required to hold the headliner up.

One I get the headliner all figured out, the rest of the interior should come back together pretty quickly.
