Not a bumper swap or changing the identity of the Mustang, just a tail light swap. It will still be an 82 GT Mustang!

Thanks and it was good to meet you too finally. Hopefully we can meet up more often, especially once I get the GT back on the road!

Always great to see a new project begin. Those front ends are so mean looking. Real close 2nd to the 85/86 in my opinion but I'm a little biased
I'll be looking forward to the updates!

We have had our best friends of 30 years up this weekend for a visit with all the family. Us guys had great plans to play with my 82 GT, but the wives didn't agree with that plan. We were finally able to get a couple of hours today after all the other girly stuff to finally spend some time in the shop working on my GT.

We were able to strip off the front fenders, bumper cover, and hood to check out all the sheetmetal underneath. The car was obviously hit at some point in it's life in the front. The majority of the damage appears to be on the driver side front. I will have to check the rails to see if they are straight of if I will need to put it on a frame machine. The repair work done was fairly crappy IMHO, so all of that will be corrected too.

Here are a couple of quick pictures before our play time was up!

Any buckling of the driver side door opening?

No you really didn't notice any damage until you start looking at the radiator support. Nothing appears to twisted or tweaked too bad. The front rails look like there might be a bit of a kink in it, but again not sure. The frame rails don't have any of the normal kink under the strut towers like you often see in a front end collision. Now that I have everything off the car it will make it a bit easier to check everything and verify what if anything is tweaked or out of alignment. I will need/want to rework the radiator support, but other than that and maybe a slight pull to realign the frame rails, I believe the car is just fine.

Did some measuring today and it appears the front end is pretty square and overall in decent shape. The radiator support replacement must have been done by either a blind welder or a 6 year old as the work is pretty bad! I will be correcting that before moving forward.

My phone is dead otherwise I would take some pictures to post up. I will do that tomorrow and show the quality craftsmanship that I will be addressing.

Ok, it took an extra day to get back to this. So here are some closeups of the radiator support and the awesome body work by a PO.

Driver side top section where the radiator support overlaps the inner sheet metal and the fender bolts on. Not even spot welded!

The spectacular and quality work of installing the bracket that gives support to the front bumper reinforcement shock/mount.

Well if you can't do a decent job welding then just slather on some caulking and that'll do ya! WTF!!!!

Last don't even worry about spot welding these two pieces together! That might some rigidity and strength the front end! Besides it would make it more difficult to cut the radiator support off the next time these idiots wreck the car!

So there you have the state of my radiator support. I didn't even show photos of the lower section as it's just as messed up! All of it can be repaired and will be addressed very soon. I am just amazed at the crappy work some people will do.

Here is the GT currently in it's very sad and beaten state.

I have stripped off the entire front suspension and K member. I have pulled back all the wiring to the firewall. I have stripped off most other parts and pieces. I also cut out the busted windshield to make access much easier. My plan is to remove the dash and the rest of the parts over the next couple of days so I have full access to all the wiring. I also need to overhaul the HVAC unit and install a new heater core. Once I have all the sheet metal work done and painted then I will begin the wiring for the EFI.

There is A LOT of work to be done before this can be installed, but here is a little teaser of the color combo for the GT!

The Grey will be the main body color of the car with the other colors being used as accents or trim colors. Not sure yet how much or if even all of them get used, but that is the idea for now. Can't wait to get started on it!
