    Default My 1982 Mustang GT Rebuild/Customization has begun!

    Ok, well sorta! I finally cleared enough space in my shop to fit my 1982 GT in there so I can finally work on one of my Four Eyes!

    Quick history on my GT, I purchased it way too many years ago, I believe back in 2007 or 2008. Found the car on craigslist over in Denver, talked to the guy on the phone and worked out a deal. I had planned on heading out to pick it up, but the guy said he was coming over to the Western Slope in a couple of weeks to visit his daughter and he would trailer it over if I paid for half the gas! Heck Yeah! No brainer there for me! I hadn't even send the guy payment for the car and he was offering that. So a couple of weeks later he calls me and tells me he will be at my house around 3:30 in the afternoon with the car. Sure enough he shows up, I pay him for it and I was the new proud owner of a 1982 GT T-top!

    The car was a rolling shell, they had yanked the motor to install into a 1965 Mustang why I have no idea. The 4 speed was still there and the rest of the car was complete, but filthy and the typical been sitting for awhile and had the wonderful aroma of mice and their lovely droppings. Unfortunately I didn't have a garage or shop to do anything with the GT at the time and so it sat, and sat, and sat . . . Finally I have my new house and new garage/shop (well new to me 2 years ago) and I finally decided it has sat for way too long!

    So here she is as she sits right now! You can see that a couple of months ago I swapped out the driver side fender due to rust under the belt molding and the driver's door for the same reason. Everything else on the exterior is just as I got it, well except for the tail lights. Yes! They are staying! I did swap in the 5 lug front spindles and an 8.8 out back with 5 lug axles too just so I didn't have to trip over the parts anymore and beside I do a 5 lug conversion on all my Four Eyes!

    Actual proof that the GT is finally in the shop and not parked out front as in the other pictures. The disassembly and rebuild will begin very soon with updates as I move along in the process.

    Nice! I really love these 82 GT's. I've had several over the years and even a red on red 82 5.0 T-top Capri.

    Not a fan of red and the red on red might be more than I could handle, but for a 1982 Capri T-top! I might have to do it!

    That Capri is the one I should have garaged and kept. It was all original, loaded, even down to the paint although faded.

    I understand that! If I could have back all the 85/86 GT's I have sold over the years! Dumb Youth!

    For me, it was also a lot of Mustangs, mostly 65-66. I did have 2-1969 fastbacks and many other cars at that time.
    I remember a 82 GT silver with black interior as well, even a customized V8 Pinto.

    Right now I am doing all I can to keep the herd that I have. I won't say that I will Never sell one of them, but at this time I have no plans to get rid of anything. Much to my wife's disappointment!

    Thanks! I have been putting this one off due to $$ being tight and other things that keep getting in the way! Finally decided enough is enough and I need to get this back on the road. I would be quicker and easier to just drop in a carbureted 302 and be on the road, but I know with the mountains, etc. around here I want the EFI to make it easier on me with elevation changes, so that is what it will be. I have all the parts and pieces, just need to get the car stripped down so I can start putting it back together.

    Thanks!

    Just curious about the car. What "was" it as far as options and colors when new? Doesn't really matter but I am just curious. The '82 GT was the one that started it all for me. One of the people who worked with my Dad bought one and I remember drooling every time I saw it. It was black on porno red. Man those are awesome.

    Which 5-lug pieces did you add? 94/95 spindles, etc.?

    Here is the break down as kindly provided by FoxChassis:

    VIN
    1FA = Ford vehicle, USA
    B = manual seatbelts, no airbags
    P = passenger car
    16 = Mustang 3-dr hatchback
    F = 5.0L engine
    6 = check digit
    C = 1982 model year
    F = Dearborn Assembly
    192196 = consecutive unit number

    VC Label
    05/82 = May 1982 build
    1C = Black paint
    58 = Twin Cities district sales office
    61B = Mustang 3-dr hatchback
    FD = cloth & vinyl seating, low-back front buckets, Medium Red interior
    A = factory air
    7 = AM/FM stereo cassette
    D = T-roof
    Z = 3.08 Traction-Lok
    4 = SROD trans
    PP = E0BZ-5310-N front springs
    NN = D9BZ-5560-R rear springs

    Buck Tag
    192196 = consecutive unit number
    61B = Mustang 3-dr hatchback
    F = 5.0L engine
    TR = T-roof
    0877 = assembly line roation #
    1CC = Black paint
    DF
    ST
    LL = louvers
    AC = factory air
    07
    S = cruise
    GT = model
    MOD = SROD trans
    05 = hood scoop
    -D = Medium Red interior

    So overall not a badly optioned 82 IMHO. If the car had been in better shape when I bought it, I might have considered restoring it, but the interior was trashed from lack of care and sitting. The engine was pulled as I said before and I was never a fan of the SROD to begin with.

    I am going to have some fun with it, but it will be anything but stock and original at this point. I will keep the majority of the 82 GT vibe going, but I will modify it to my personal tastes and desires for fun. I plan on keeping this one until I can't drive anymore or be buried in it which ever comes first!

    Right now it has the 94/95 spindles on it with Fox arms. I am debating using the SN95 arms, but I haven't made up my mind yet. I have a set of Maximum Motorsports Fox length lower control arms that I might use if I decide to go coil over. Just trying to determine what the budget can afford and what all I have stashed away that will work right now. I will run the 13" Cobra brakes up front and the Cobra brakes in the rear.

    Thanks! From what I have been able to see and find so far it does look to be a decent starting point. The car was hit at one point up front and the radiator support and hood are definitely not original. I assume the same for the bumper cover and air dam. My only real concern is the radiator support, I am not sure it was put back as well as I would like, so I will be checking that out and double checking the engine bay measurements before I get too far along.

    Agreed. Once you start, you can't stop and leave us hanging!

    Good luck with your project
    More updates to come I promise! I had planned on working on it last night, but my youngest decided otherwise! I was able to dig through my parts and find a couple of items for the car like my EFI inner fender, my Cobra rear calipers, my SVO cluster, and my MM steering shaft. Hope to get in there tonight and start the tear down. Luckily I stripped out the interior awhile back to help get rid of the ole' mice smell! Once it's all stripped down it will get another power washing and full cleaning to remove any remaining traces and smells of the little bastards!

    I have my best friend from High School and his family coming up to visit. I have built several of his cars over the years. I sent him a photo of the GT in the garage and his was reply was "We'll have it up and running by the weekend!" I said, YEAH! I WISH!

    Oh! I forgot to mention my Vinyl Wrap all came in yesterday for the GT!

    I will post up some pictures after I get all of it unrolled.
