Default Just picked up this 84 SVO

    Here she is:

its going to need some work, but I'm really happy with it. I think this is going to become my new daily driver. It definitely needs a new dash pad, fuel system, and exhaust. Luckily, I've been stockpiling go-fast parts. I was planning to throw them on my turbocoupe as a test car for the road race notch project, but an SVO is just so much cooler, in my opinion.

I'll try to keep this thread updated as I go. I definitely have a lot to learn about the oddities of these. I need to sort out a useable email address to join the SVOCA forum.

First order of business is fuel. The in-tank pump is bad. I'm going to swap it out with a Walbro 255 and put a filter in place of the external pump.

Thanks. I found out the driver side floor pan is cracked. I can feel the seat move, so I got under and found cracks. Luckily, there's no rust. Is this a common problem?

Looks nice and pretty original. Any more pictures to share?

PS: I love driving my SVO!

I'll post up a lot of pics. I have it up on the lift with another car under it right now.

I I have all the materials to build my header except for the flange. I literally have a pile of go fast parts sitting in my laundry room. I was getting ready to put them on my turbocoupe until I picked this car up.

Cracks are/were a very common problem. Ford started reinforcing the pans as a running change somewhere around late '84 I believe. The later years do not crack. weld them up and install some subframe connectors that have the seat support welded to them and you should be fine.

I was just looking at pics of various sfc's. They seem easy enough to fabricate; not sure why companies charge so much for them. I'll post pics here when I build them.

Transmission question: this one grinds a bit going into third gear. AFAIK, it's a non-world class T5. I have a WC T5 from an 86 turbocoupe that's in good shape. My options are to rebuild the nwc that's in it or swap them out. I'm not sure if the gear ratios in the WC T5 are better or worse. What would you guys recommend?

Pardon if I am wrong, I'm just going by what I have read in transmission spread sheet charts, I thought none of the turbo 2.3 trans were World Class? They just have different gear ratios depending on models.

Pretty sure the 2.3's after 85.5 are world class

Ok, like I said, I wasn't sure, so I went back and reread on it and yes you are correct about the introduction of the WC in 1985, but it had the same torque rating (265lb) as the NWC transmission that it replaced, according to data from this page. The marker World Class merely represents a type of tapered bearing set used for the new T5 that was meant for world sales. But it does not mean that is has the higher 300lb torque rating of the later 5.0 World Class transmissions. The WC T5 from the 2.3 turbo cars was still rated at 265lb torque.

I went through this a few years ago, trying to hunt down a stronger T5 from the later turbo cars, but what I found out was, though there are WC and NWC, they have the same torque rating, so it doesn't seem to really matter?

(that was what I was driving at) lol

I get what you're saying. I was really hoping the 86 turbocoupe t5 had better ratios. It sounds like they're the same.

I really dont don't see a need for 4:1 first gear.

I was wondering on my build if switching to a 3.25 or even a 3:08 rear axle might be more suitable given the higher horsepower of my motor and that low first gear. I know that track cars need to find that sweet spot so that 3rd and 4th can be your primary gears, but a street car doesn't have any such requirements. A higher rear axle ratio would make 1st gear more useful, and give me better freeway legs and a higher top speed in 4th gear. I haven't found anyone who has tried this combination to ask, so I might have to try it out.

Also, I'm not at all interested in drag racing my SVO.... that is what my V8 cars are for! My SVO will be more of a touring car build... a road car. So I'm not very concerned with how fast it can launch out of the hole.

I plan to drag race mine at some test n tune nights, but I don't want to build it for drag racing. Seems like a waste.

Got my fuel pump hanger swapped with this unit from high flow fuel. It has -8 feed and -6 return fittings. I know it's overkill, but I don't want to have to drop the tank again.
