I love broncos. I had 5 of them myself. On my 6th Mustang, so another Bronco is probably next. Waiting to see the up coming 2020 Bronco. I could be my very first brand new vehicle. If it is any good that is. Hard to beat one like yours.

Nice build!! I've owned 2 other 78/79 Bronco's before and now I'm finally building a 78 the way I want it. Against the conventional grain of lifting a 4x4 and adding huge tires.......take a deep breath here and let the hate mail begin......I'm converting it to 2-wheel drive and making it a low-slung-canyon-carving- puppy-hauling-tire-roasting-suv like Ford should've offered!!!

The front end will me the 2004+ Crown Vic front cradle with a 3:50 geared 9" hanging out back. Four-wheel disks should slow her down while either my built 351 Cleveland or a healthy 351 Windsor will push it down the road.

Should look pretty cool. These years broncos have really nice lines, up high or down low. It would be sweet to keep it a 4x4 but use an independent front suspension for better handling than the original solid axle.

Been a while since I did an update. I pulled the stockish 460 that came with my bronco out today and set the 545 in place. The cam has been reground. I can add cam specs later if anyone is interested. Basically it's a hydraulic roller cam lobe profile that I will be using solid roller lifters on, much less spring pressure should make the lifters last much longer.

I got this heavy SOB out.

It won't be going back in like this, probably the trans and then the adapter and transfer case. I took three C-6's apart to make one hopefully good one. Checking end play here. Once I finish up the valve body tomorrow, I can air check and if all is okay, install the trans. I got a 3000rpm stall converter from Edge.

Maybe I'll get the trans in by the end of the week if I don't run into any problems.

More progress. Had to cut the crossmember in order to get at the front drain plug.

Transmission going in. Worked great, but getting the transfer case in afterwards was a real pain in the ass. If I have to pull them out again soon I think I'll get a Harbor Freight ATV lift to do the job.

Headers fought me tooth and nail. But they are in. I heat wrapped pipes that are directly the cab. I still have to make the rest of the exhaust. I'm just going to dump the pipes after a set of DynoMax Ultraflow mufflers.

    The money shot.

Might be able to fire the motor up towards the end of next week.

Guess it been a while since I updated this. It runs! But Photobucket is giving me a hard time uploading pictures and video. I do have some issues. Power steering line I made is fine, but the box leaks just above the pitman arm. Intake gasket leaks, I tried to reuse a almost new set and they bit me on the butt. Stupid chrome thermostat housing leaks. Remote oil filter leaks. The wiring was completely trashed in the engine compartment. Wires cut, added, eliminated, and so on. I swapped in a late model 130 amp 3g alternator, this eliminated the external voltage regulator and it wiring. Motor runs good, fires right up, but I have the jump the solenoid because for some reason it doesn't get power from the ignition switch when in the start position. Just another thing to get sorted out. I still have a huge list of things to do. But I have pretty much met my goal for what I wanted to get done on it this year.

First trip out of the garage under it's own power. I had to put the stock f350 wheels and tires on and let the air out to get the bronco out of the garage. Since I only have two of the big tires mounted I just did one side.

My kids wanted to sit in the back.

I still need to make up some body mounts for the radiator support.

Look at all the nice green leaves on the trees in those pictures. Lol. Not really the case now. Did rotors, calipers, and pads. Passenger side no problems. Drivers side had every one of the hub bolts rusted to the hub. I soaked them for a day with WD-40, tapped on them with a punch and hammer, tried a brand new wrench, no such luck. Had to drill them out.

That was a bunch of time wasted, had to to it though. As a funny aside, mice had chewed through the rubber boot on the passenger side caliper pistons. I never saw that before. I can't imagine they were to tasty.

I made up some mounts for the radiator support. Still have to cut off the stock truck mounts.

Welded them on. I had to angle the lift block a bit to get the angle of the mount to match the angle of the radiator support. They are nice and beefy.

Next time you have some bolt/screws rusted stuck use a 50/50 mix of transmission fluid and acetone. Works FAR better than any commercially available product I have ever tried. Let it soak awhile (overnight is great) and out comes the fastener!

Best rust buster I have ever used!

A little scientific testing support to back up this claim:

"Recent article from Machinist Workshop Magazine.

They tested some commercially available penetrating oils on a group of nuts & bolts they had scientifically rusted to a uniform degree in a salt water solution.

The fasteners were treated with a variety of commercially available penetrant's and the measured torque required to loosen them was recorded.

The break out torque required for:
    Nothing = 516 ft. lbs.
    WD-40 = 238 ft. lbs.
PB Blaster = 214 ft. lbs.
Liquid Wrench = 127 ft. lbs.
Kano Kroil = 106 ft. lbs.
50/50 blend of ATF and Acetone = 50 ft. lbs.

That's TWICE as good as Kroil!

    Edit:

It was pointed out that this was a topic a few months ago so I read through that thread and did notice someone also recommended GM 1052627 heat valve/EGR lube. I have personally used a similar Mopar EGR product for years that works very well but it is much more costly then using the ATF and Acetone mix."

I have heard of that mix before. Guess it needs to be stored in a seal container to keep the acetone from evaporating. I should make some up and keep it on hand. PB blaster, WD40, and the like aren't cheap any more.

In this case the tiny alen heads rounded off right away. I think the passenger side had been apart more recently than the driver side. Truck sat 12 years before I got it.

Got some progress on the rear floor. I cut the size I needed to make a floor with out of my donor truck before I scrapped it. I kept the end of the bed because, of course, that area on my bronco was rotted out too.

I had delusions that I would be able to fit this in in one piece. Ha ha, wasn't going to happen. I ended up with three pieces.

Plug welded to the 2 x 3" tubing of the sub-floor.

I still have to finalize the location of the bed sides on the floor, and weld it all together. Taillight area near the bed floor is a bit crusty. I might end up going back over that area in a few years.

I also have to weld the bed sides to the bed from the back to the front. I have also made my rear seat mounts. A bit more welding in the back and I can move on to other areas of the floor.

The frame had several rust holes in it around the rear spring mounts, and the f-350 frame is made of thicker steel than the bronco. Plus, I wanted to use the one ton axles from the f-350. I figured if I used the truck frame the axle suspension points could stay in the factory locations. No need to adapt the leaf springs to the coil sprung bronco frame, or adapting the coil springs to the leaf spring front axle. I figured it would be less hassle and stronger.

I got a bunch of the floor in. Been working from the back to the front. Drivers side is done, passengers side needs basically under where the front seat goes.

I bought a 1979 f-150 suercab that needed floors, big surprise there. I like to punish myself apparently. It had a 302 but will be getting a 460 next week. Ported heads with larger valves, custom hydraulic cam, .030" over pistons, Fitech EFI, should be a torquey fun motor. It has been a priority because I bought a larger camper and don't have anything to pull it with. A slight oversight. Once that is on the road I will get back on the bronco. I tired of it being in the way in my garage. Pictures of the truck, not the bronco.

Excellent! I never get tired of Dentsides. I've got a '77 F150 regular cab long bed. I put a new cab on mine.

I've also figured out, since I've had it, that the '300' under my hood is really a 240...

I never liked the look of the long boxes, but I don't mind it with the longer cab on mine. Looks more balanced. You going to do something about that 240? The 302 in my truck ran okay, seemed to have enough power the limited times I drove it before pulling it apart. I had the 460 that came in the bronco and a bunch of other bbf goodies I wanted to use, so the 460 route made sense.

I like the long bed better, but a shortbed Dentside is OK - although I'd rather have the Flareside,(step side) in the shorter wheelbase. Short beds kind of make better hot rods.
They also made some long-bed Flaresides.

I almost don't like the shortbed Bumpsides, as they're even shorter than Dentsides, which have a couple more inches at the rear of the cab, and end up looking too short - but I still think I like Bumps a little better than Dents.

How about the F350 Camper Specials and Trailer Specials! They had an 8 foot bed like standard long beds, but the rear axle was moved rearward 7 inches for a longer wheelbase! They're the ones with the spare tire compartment in front of the right rear wheel. They kind of look funny when you see them - until you stick a big ol' camper on them which adds to the rear overhang to balance the look.

Never been a fan of any extended cabs, but the Super Cabs are growing on me. Looks like yours has the rear bench? Or does it have the jump seats? I'm starting to learn these Dentsides pretty well. I also just recently scored a set of the OEM Styled Forged Aluminum Five Slot wheels, like what came on some of the Free Wheeling trucks. $275 off of Craigslist, with the center caps - which have been painted. I had been rocking a set of the factory Mag Style wheel covers I found on CL for $50, but they interfered with my valve stems, causing one tire to leak down in just a couple days.

I want to get a real 300 to put back in place of the 240, although if staying carb'ed, I'd want the 240 head on the 300, for higher compression. But I'd really like to do an EFI 300 as well. The big sixes are as cool as a V8, just in different ways - that 300 is a real truck engine though! I've got my '88 GT for a V8 fix...

My truck has the rear bench seat. Which is great, room for six people. When we go camping we will be able to take one vehicle now. I really like how when the rear seat is folded flat it makes a flat metal surface. No plastic stuff to worry about breaking if you put something on top of it. The 300 is a very reliable motor, there are even a few turbocharged ones driving around.

I'm not that familiar with all the different versions of these trucks, most of them around here are rotted away by now. Which of course makes mine cooler, and worth putting some time and money into.
