    Default Its Door Window installation Day! Yuk!

    We're in house renovation mode here as well. I started this car resto in 2014, and hit all kinds of issues that I wanted to get right this time. Had to strip the donor Zephyr down to scrap, for the new driver's side front, learn to MIG Weld, research my options for the rear axle, install new subframes. I wanted the DANA 44 with posi-trac, new suspension all around, a swap to a 4-speed, tilt wheel, missing parts, new tires, etc.

    And today and tomorrow, I'll finally install the glass, motors and locks. AMEN!

    It was raining this morning, so last night, in front of my wife's quizzical looks of disbelief, I brought down all the windows, the rear seat parts, and she sat there dumfounded. All from the upstairs that's supposed to be done this summer. I wanted the rain to soak off the muck off the bottom of the windows, and the seats inside the plastic 'garage' for a quick install, without getting wet.

    Today's the day. There's only the door panels and interior trim up there now. July 1st is my outer marker. I'm hoping for early next week, to crank her up.

    The Yuk part is working inside each door getting those rails back in and the power toys. But so goes the hobby. Probably need a small transfusion afterward or a zillion bandaids.

    Worth the pain, to get that look off my wife's face.

    Didn't advance as far as I had planned. Unconsciously resisting good organization did me in, yesterday.

    If you watch 'My Friend Pete' on his DIYAutoSchool youtube channel, whenever he strips a car, he has a few boxes of zip-lock bags with the whitespace, to mark what the parts are for, which car, side of vehicle, etc. Well, for doors, that's essential. I didn't. I had to run through all of my many Area 51s and find the rubber, the door latches, the single rail supports, and the rivets that I never bought.

    I went through the Body Factory manual, again, and realized that Ford recommends their little bolt kits. I also checked a couple fastener sites for the 1/4" X 3/4" shank rivets - ha!

    Well I went to Home Depot and bought all Stainless Steel hardware - $78.00 - I bought a few extra 33 pcs X 1/2" and 7 pcs X 1" all 1/4", 20 threads per inch (TPI) and SS Nuts and lock washers. The 1" bolts are for fastening the nylon slide at the bottom of the front door glass. I had to do both doors. I have one extra for the nylon sliders, and 7 extra of the 1/2", because I have power door locks. The power windows use the same as the manual mechanisms. Some bolts are real PITAs to get installed, at the motors, I have another solution for the exterior door handles which I'll post as I move ahead. The black rivets would be nice, but my way works too.

    The last time (2007-200, that I did this I got new window seals, so I found one. Oh crap, where's the other... It was still in my driver's door, which I had removed and set aside. Whew!

    Anyway, its in progress.

    Had to align the doors first. But I started installing the rear doors' windows once I got them aligned. No pics yet.

    The 6 side windows are in! Those 2 little rear door windows are simple enough, but the installation can be tricky. Anyway, I got the motors in, next the PDLs and then the door latch hardware, and finally the wiring, door speakers and inner panels.

    Default One awesome riveter!

    I mentioned that I had another solution, but a well-priced riveter made me think twice.

    Princess Auto isn't really an automotive store any more. They focus on the agricultural, DIY, and rural trade. And they carry some nice farmer-grade tools for good prices.

    This 18" riveter is well-made and makes mincemeat out of those 1/4" rivets. 4 door handles in just over 4 minutes. I got the rivets last year and forgot I had them. Thought I'd rent a rivet tool. $47.00 Canadian ($35.00 USD).

    I'm pretty sure your stores would have them too. I have to remove the handles when I do the final paint later this summer. What a nice piece of work!

    The rivets are a specialty item here, for some reason. Made my day.

    I used furniture adjusters 1/4" X 20 TPI, the last time, because they have a 3/32" X 3/4" diameter head. I had to cut them from 2" long to 3/4" long, with self-locking nuts. I also had to trim down the plastic shield for each handle so they would sit flush under the handle. They don't come plated, so after 8 years, they had begun to form a light coat of rust. The rivets are much better.

    YUK! Yuk!

    My arms are too long, or I should have done it in a different order. The vertical window tube shouldn't be installed on the front doors, and the rear stationary glass divider neither!

    BUT, I learned something... The rods are color-coded - RED for Right, and Light Green for Left (Driver side). The Zephyr's latch rods weren't all cleaned off, like mine. My door latches were in excellent condition, and the Zephyr's were only dusty, so I'll keep them.

    Gets tight in there. Especially with big fingers to get those rod clips to snap on properly.

    I'll be taking pics later today. Its worth it, taking the hardware off in a major resto. You can get at the interior rusty areas and clean them up to prevent any further rust. But its a real PITArms!

    Back in November, last year, I was in a rush to get the car on the road (after 5 years of bus rides), so I just installed everything in a rush. It was already hitting way below ZERO, so I figured I'd live with the lack of power windows and locks until now. Well the PDL motors weren't dependable so I pulled them. In removing them, since I used the 1984 circuits, the 2 relays were under the hood on the Pass. side. As I was bent over, I noticed that the main window circuit breaker ("A") wasn't connected to the starter relay. But I had already removed the door panels, so I applied marine grease to the window arms and sliders, and checked out each window. I don't have the front window vents.

    Before the 2010 'crunch' these windows used to go all the way down. Apparently PW were not an option on these non-vented doors:

    And I had to clean off the commutator (and the brushes) on one of the front motors, so I pulled it out and installed it upside-down on the other side. It now goes all the way down. Even the wires hook up.

But everyone was buying Chrysler Jeeps, so whats a Chapter Eleven?)

    I had my first taste of Ventipane-less Mustang power window motoring in September 2010....and the start of US Ford love after a lifetime of NON Ventipane Ford Escort, Cortina and Falcon ownership. last Ventipane Ford was the XB GT, an option not often picked up....

    No, wire hubcaps. Yeah, the frost in my city runs down to 3.5 feet. Takes until early June to thaw out. We got down to -42C this winter.

    I saw a set of real wire wheels for the Fairmont 'Elite' in Latin America's equivalent to Craiglist a while back, and I'll eventually get a set. The Mexican 'Elite' is really the Mercury Zephyr down there. I had a set on a 1963 Buick Riviera and they are nice. A pain to clean, though.
