Default Speaker Size 84 Mustang Convertible Rear Quarter Panel

I searched the forum for an answer to this but couldn't find one. Does anyone know what size speaker fits into the rear quarter panels of the 84 Mustang GT convertible? These are the speakers that are mounted behind the carpet. I want to purchase new speakers, but I don't want to take the car apart until I purchase the new ones. Thanks

I believe they are 6 1/2" speakers, but I could be wrong.

I am not the convertible expert by any means, so hopefully another member will either confirm or correct my information.

Interested to hear from someone who knows as well. In 83 there were no speakers in the quarters from the factory afaik. Mine, with factory 'premium'(lol) sound has 2 door speakers for the rear and two small(3"?) speakers under the front dash pad. Assumed 84s would be the same... I assume your system is factory Smitty?

It is factory. I just don't want to remove the panels until I get new speakers.

That's interesting. Do you have door speakers as well? And if so are they at the back or front of the doors? Mine are at the back-not a great location. Upgraded them along with the amp and head unit years ago but still not great.

No, the 84 GT didn't come with factory door speakers.

A bazooka in the trunk helped but took up a fair bit of space. Couldn't even get a sleeping bag and the obligatory 2-4 case of beer in when going away for weekends

    Rick,
I'm almost positive it is a 6 1/2" speaker, but I could be wrong. I will see if I can find any pics of this when I had my 84 vert apart.

    I just pulled the ones from my 84 convertible. 6 1/4" outside diameter. 2" mounting depth.Name: 20160801_164942.jpg

These may work pretty well in that location as long as you don't outrun the x-max. The Qts is about right for open back, just put a little fiberglass in the hole before you mount the speaker. The location makes them useless for mid or high frequency output but they could be a good stealth install for mid-bass. Especially if you leave the carpet over them. If you cut them off below 200-400 Hz the carpet wont matter. You may want to high-pass them from say 40-50Hz (again to keep from overpowering them). I was considering these for my 86 vert but haven't committed yet. Still looking at a stealth system layout with to many unanswered questions but they are definitely a consideration. The verts don't have much wiggle room for audio unless you want to cut the car up and I don't.
