Default 1987 FI 2.3 poor idle

The shop replaced the fuel pressure regulator, and this improved things, but there is still the occasional popping in the exhaust, and sometimes a very unsatisfactory idle which requires some throttle to keep things going.
I'm much more accustomed to carburetors, and don't know the first thing about fuel injection. I did speed up the idle one turn of the screw, and this helped, but did not address the underlying problem.
Any knowledge that anyone can impart would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Off the top of my head,

First thing would be to check for vacuum leaks.
If popping is backfire check emission controls.
    Check, clean throttle body.
Have a parts store or buy a code reader and check the ECU for any codes.
    Fuel filter check.
    Clogged Injector.

You only need a paper clip to run codes. It takes all of 2 minutes.

I use a test light and record the codes on my phone. Without codes, you are just stabbing in the dark.

Ah...so this is one that can use a code reading. I will watch that video and see how it's done. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Kinda science fiction like for an old tractor jockey like me.

Its no more complicated then a digital calculator.

Record the codes on a cell phone, upload to YouTube and let us help you trouble shoot the problems.

This video I made when it was -8°f outside in the middle of a cold snap.

I'll hunt up my analog meter and hopefully get this done soon. We have suddenly found ourselves raising four orphaned kittens, and feeding them is a slow go so far. Who would have thought that stray cat would travel over half a mile from the barn to hunt and get hit in the road. Sad.
Your method has that "old time mechanic" appeal to it that we have lost in our modern "part changing" world.

You can also get the codes with an old school 12v circuit tester light.
