    Default 3g alternator help

Good afternoon fellow members! I am doing a 3g alternator on my car and i need help. I know there is detailed info on many different ford cars. I am confused on what to do. First i have an 82 Mercury Capri 5.0 I have an alternator from a 99 taurus with the pigtail, mega 200 amp fuse, the holder and battery cable wire. How do I make this all work in my car? Thanks for the help. I am a newbie with electrical.

Get a pigtail for the 3g alt if you don't already. Splice the green plug to a key on power source, Grrey plug goes to alt, yellow loop back to output stud. Find a place to mount the mega fuse, run a 6 guage or large wire from alt output stud to mega fuse, then mega fuse to battery or always hot side of starter solinoid. Tape up or remove all factory wires left over and you are done.

Not sure on 82 brackets, but efi cars need slight clearencing to alt bracket.

You don't need the battery cable wire you need a 4 gauge wire to run from the alternator terminal to the battery side of the starter solenoid. Second post has a diagram.

Depends on which alternator you go with a 95 mustang doesn't need to get clocked the Taurus one does

Pull the 3 case bolts and pull the pulley off and rotate the housing to where you want it.

I had a lot going on the past few months but I am going to do this upgrade and I am stoked about it but I have one more question? I have an 130 amp alt. from a 99 Taurus the pulley look bigger then my stock one. What size belt do I get or do I change the pullies and keep the stock belt

A bit bigger diameter pulley won't hurt anything. The alternator will just spin a tad slower, which isn't a bad thing. A bigger diameter alternator pulley is sometimes included in those under drive kits. See if there's enough adjustment with the belt you have.

Oh, I have a question... does your '82 run a (narrow) v-belt, or is it (wide, six rib) serpentine like the 3G alternator?

Alright, if your belt's in good shape, I'd suggest seeing if there's enough adjustment with the belt you have.

If it looks like you need to clearance your alternator bracket, I suggest a March bracket (cheaper versions available on ebay). It allows you to eliminate the factory bracket and tensioner. Looks great and cleans up the front of your motor.

I ran a 2000ish Taurus alt. You don't have to pull the pulls to reclock it, just undo the three long bolts in the case and spin it. The clearencing on efi brackets would take 30 seconds with a hack saw, you remove maybe a 1/4" thick price about 1/2" long. You could probably just hit it with a hammer to chip it off.

You will need a new longer bolt or to tap a die the top bolt hole and the bottom bolt hole is much smaller and will need reemed out some. I happened to have a few large drill bits on hand, but a small dremmel or even just a smaller bolt with a nut might work just as well.

Thanks Haystack for the info I was skeptical about pulling the alternator apart.
