They are there........
Most likely being that we taped the backside they appeared "bridged".
That was only 30 minutes after baking.....
Single stage too......original as possible....
What name brand paint did you use? I want to shoot mine in single stage also.
Happy birthday!! Lookin good!!
I believe the original paint back then was PPG Ditzler Delstar acrylic enamel?

Short answer to paint type........PPG's Shop-Line Acrylic Urethane......
Long answer........
I had painted the shell back in the late 80's with basecoat/clearcoat, and never really like it, so I never put the car back together.
Luckily (or unluckily for my paint supplier) I had never painted the fuel door back then. So I still had a panel with the original paint that had not been exposed to UV except the first 5 or so years of it's life.
I knew I want to go back to single stage color so we started out with PPG's Concept, mixed up the formula, did a spray out to compare it to the fuel door. Not even close.....
So my PPG regional rep lives in the area and he got involved.
They did some tinting with the concept and just couldn't get it to move the way we needed.
Next we went to PPG's Fleetline.....same thing, get it close but just not there, either the metallic was to coarse or the flop was off.
Back to square one..........on to PPG's Shop Line.......after a day of tinting and messing with metallic's, and about 5 more spray outs we finally got it dialed in...
Really close to the original fuel door........
Needless to say, I sprayed a different fuel door, so I could keep the original one as a baseline...just in case.....
That was exactly the answer I was looking for. Thanks.
I had two paint suppliers tell me they could not mix that color in a single stage. I found the paint code and mixing ratio in the ppg book, but never have seen a pace car that was painted with base clear that I have liked. I'm finding more and more that I like the looks of a single stage paint much better. I think what it is is that people are putting too many coats of clear on them and they look like there wrapped in plastic. I have also been told that the clear will change the color of the base if it's cheap clear. Ive seen several of them with base clear and they had a yellow or gold tint to them.
One more thing. How many coats did you spray and how much paint did you use? And is there any chance I could buy the paint from you?
We put a total of three color coats and then while we were finishing up the third coat we used a higher pressure drop coat to make sure the metallic flowed and to try to keep any areas for looking dry.
As for the color, it is a LOT less gold than the first spray that we did based on the historical formula.
It does still make me shake my head when I look at at different angles and under different lighting, as it is a little less silver than I remember it from 1979.
But taking the original fuel door and the one we sprayed outside in the sun the color is really close......
I can probability get you the formula we ended up with and you can have your local PPG jobber mix it.
What part of Minnesota are you in???
I can check with my rep and see if there is a particular jobber in that area.
I'm north of the twin cities. There is a PPG supplier in forest lake called Nabco. If you really like the color that you ended up with and are happy with how the color matched I defiantly would like to get the formula.
It looks great. Please post finished pictures!
Are you still happy with the paint and color of your car? I would like to get going on mine, and would still like the single stage.
Yes...I am......
Looks really nice. Good job

That is a great picture in Gasoline Alley.
The car looks awesome! Is there any chance I could get you to mix me up and sell me a gallon of the paint?
I can get you the formula we used and you can have your local PPG automotive paint store mix it for you....
(shipping paint....using correct EPA procedures can be a pain)
Drop me an email at: csamuels@prestigeabr.com
And I will send it to.....also in the email give me your zip code and I can have my PPG rep give me the info on your local store......
Will do, thank you much!
I will be doing paint also, and after reading this I realize that I am totally ignorant to many facts about the paint in general.
I would like the information as well if its not a hassle. I am on Bristol, Tn./Bristol, Va. border.
I will email you as well.

I think Trey was asking about the holes for the scoop to be mounted....
I agree that only the turbo cars had a "hole" stamped in them.....
