Nice going. What is the part number tranny cross member you used? I need that one for the 80 I'm putting a aod in.

Tried sending you a PM but box is full.

More sanding today! Discovered cracked paint from a previous repair on the driver's side from the front fender back. The cracks went all the way to the metal so we broke out the air grinder and some 80 grit paper to sand everything off. Looks like it was probably side swiped. This is how far we got before we ran out of sandpaper.

Finally got back to the bodywork yesterday! I haven't touched it since June 29 when I cut my finger with a grinder and got four stitches. Other life things happened also, but I'm back at it.

First I replaced the transmission mount then did some more work on the driver's side.

Got the gauges installed today! Does anyone know why I would have to set the tach to 4 cyl to read right? It reads too low on 8 cyl.

Me and my Dad got some good progress this weekend. Those folks used to seeing paint jobs done under laboratory like conditions will cringe. This won't be a show car just a driver. Our standard of quality is "We can't make it any worse than it already is!" But actually it turned out pretty well for being outside. The Zephyr is finally in primer now! The primer is Duplicolor in the quarts. We used about a gallon to spray the whole car. After this is sanding, spot filler, sanding, more primer, sanding, and then sealer and single stage color.

This is our masking paper. It's paper used in cardboard production for boxes. It's really too thick for masking, but it is tough paper.

Yesterday was spot fill day to fill the door dings, etc. I also detailed the tail lights using silver sharpies and primered the cowl vent. Assuming the weather holds up we're looking at next weekend for sanding and spraying the sealer and the weekend after that for sanding and paint so I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel!

Just a quick update. It was raining here this weekend so no bodywork, but we installed new shocks and struts and an a/c delete pulley since it's probably gonna be a while before we tackle getting the a/c working. The primer is sanded and ready for sealer we're just waiting on a nice day to spray sealer.

The Zephyr has a barrier coat of sealer. Now we wait for it to dry then sand with 600 and paint.

Since the last update we got the sealer sanded and today we got it painted. We have some runs to deal with, but other than that it turned out pretty good for a carport paintjob. It helped that it rained yesterday too to keep the dust down. What is odd is the color is supposed to be arctic white, but it looks light grey?

Yesterday we worked on the runs some. We'll finish them out when we wet sand and buff it later on. Then we pulled the masking tape or more like scrape the masking tape because it's been on the car since labor day weekend! After that we put the trim back on, and I snapped a couple pics before dark. The door window frames still need to be painted so that's next. They're gonna be satin black.

An old painter that worked at the shop with my dad would often crank out some one-liners when doing a job that didn't need perfection, it just needed DONE.

You'd hear him say stuff like "she ain't perfect, but she ain't awful" and stuff like "its not too terrible" or my favorite - "good enough for the chicks we hang out with." LOL

He was also the same guy that would see a car that had obviously been all busted up and now has parts from 3 different cars that are 4 different colors come in and he'd say "do you know what would really improve the looks of your car? Make it all one color!" Always got a laugh from the guys that had been to countless junkyards grabbing pieces and parts to get to a point where they could ask for an estimate on some paint.

All jokes aside, by the time you get a good wet sand done on any runs then buff the hell out of it will look the best its looked in years. Actually, I'm pretty sure looking back at what you started with you're already well past the whole "better than its looked in years" thing. A little more work and it will simply look GREAT.

Well done, keep up the good work.

You have done a great job transforming what was a forgotten gem. Your paint turned out really good and best of all you did it yourself.

Thanks for the kind words! We got the window frames painted. I thought about blacking it out like an ES, but decided just to do the frames for now. We also got the bumpers polished which was a chore. It took about 3 applications of oven cleaner letting it sit for 30 minutes each time to eat the anodizing. And then sanding with 320 then 600, 1000, 1500, 2000 and then mothers polish with a buffer.

Holy hell, those bumpers turned out great. I woulda thought oven cleaner would kill the chrome. I'm sure you can see the details up close in real life, but that looks great in pictures. Probably a perfect 15 footer. That's a really nice job for doing it in the carport!!!!!
