    Default Customized Sport Steering Wheel

I bought a Ford factory sport steering for a Fairmont 15 years ago. Turns out it was not as nice as it looked on Ebay when it arrived home. The spokes had been spray bombed silver to cover the rust and original black color. The rubber grip was rough....worn and nicked.
As disappointed as I was I held on to it, thinking I could fix it or resell it....I only paid $20 for it.
Over the years I decided to try someday replace the grip with wood and restore the spokes.
    Well that time finally came.
Here is what I started out with.

Next I started to machine the wood to fit both in shape and size. Needs to rap around the steel.

Now time to glue the wood to the wheel

All sanded and stained. Dont worry....the color will lighten with the clear coat. The clear and the this type of wood will color change in different lighting like pearl paint finish.

The center cap had some help too

Where the pencil is pointing is the damaged area.

Really nice work! I'm not crazy about wood steering wheels but, what you did looks great. A really good use for a wheel that was otherwise not going to be used.

Turned out absolutely gorgeous! What did you use to make the final shape so nice and consistent?

Agreeing with everyone that the mod looks fantastic!

You have the dimensions and the tools, you could pump out a few extra now!

Sure...but it would be cheaper to buy an aftermarket steering wheel. Crazy how much time flies and how much wood is needed.

Thanks Brad. Other then a router I really finalized the shape by hand. Sanding and carving then more sanding.
