Default 1985.5 SVO project (Here I go again!)

    Hey all,

I couldn't leave well enough alone. I finished my Dominator Mustang project and started to feel like I needed something new. I have a 1986 GT Vert with 59k on it, the completely restored 1985 Dominator GT (see the Dominator section of Foureyedpride for that project) and decided what better to complete the family than to restore a 1985.5 SVO.

    So.....

I picked this up today. A gluten for punishment but what the heck. If it comes to life anything like my Dominator, it should be a fun project. Most of the brown you see is dead pine tree needles and not rust.

Here is a link to my last project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoRE9_Jl-J8

Nice work! Ambitious project you have ahead of you. It looks like a good starting point and mostly there. The first batch of pictures had me thinking it was blue, but then the others showed the silver more.

    Good luck!

Ambitious, but should be much easier than the one I just completed. Actually everything is there, but the last owner felt compelled to put a later model dash in it so I have to tear that back out. Fortunately I have the original. Floor pans look pretty good and all the requisite pieces are there and in good shape. This is just time and clean up followed by paint. My son is a mechanic so he will do the engine.

If you want to know what ambitious (or stupidity) really is, read this book on the last project LOL:

It was a great family project, but not sure I'd ever take on something that bad again.

Looks like no A/C compressor in the pictures.

Is this a No A/C car?

    Possible Comp Prep?

I believe it's an Air car, just removed. I found the receiver/drier canister in the back hatch area. I will look closer to verify.

The first order at hand was to take out the later model dash that some )*&(*& decided was better than the original. I also soda blasted the floor pans and found one area I am going to patch otherwise they are pretty good.

I also found out the computer is missing (or I lost it) so I am on the hunt for a replacement. All the wiring has to go too as the individual who swapped dashes also put the wire harness for that dash in it. The project begins....

I had the steering wheel re-done with new outside leather (the old was peeling and falling apart). Super pleased with how it turned out. A lot of meticulous work to restitch a steering wheel!

I also had the front seats fixed and the rear seats cleaned. The floor pan spot that needed welding is done and the pans have been sprayed with primer.

Next step is to put the dash in (once the weather cools down, awfully hot right now!). Enjoy the pics.....

What does it cost to recover a steering wheel? It does look nice. I guess if the OEM one was as bad as most of them, that awful airbag wheel may be better but that is the ONLY way. Man, that non tilt column and Crown Vic sourced wheel were terrible when new even.

Too bad about the dash swap, I wonder why the PO would have opted to do all that work and their reasoning for it

Did you do all of the leather work yourself? I had Bob Tweedy redo one for me including the horn pad. Regardless, it looks really nice!

I found a guy locally here that did the steering wheel for $350. He had 4 hours labor cutting the pattern and then meticulously sewing it. Most resto shops here wouldn't touch it, they didn't have the patience to do the sewing!

When asked the same question by the guys that did my seats, they had heard $700 if you sent it off and had it done so they felt I got a great deal.

Steering wheel was done by a young guy, one man resto shop locally. As far as the dash, I cant fathom what they were thinking but fortunately they didnt scrap the original so it is just work now.

I think the thrill of the hunt and doing the work is why we do it, the finished product is nice but then you have one of those "what now?" moments that lead you to buy another one!

Call "Dung" at Dallas Steering Wheel.

Recovering steering wheels is all they do and they do a FABULOUS job!

I have used them many times always a superb job with quick turnaround IF they do not already have a core of your wheel in stock for exchange.

They can also leather wrap your originally non-leather wrapped steering wheel if you so desire.

Nice looking project and great progress in a short time too! BTW, you got a STEAL on that wheel recover, that was crazy low for the time spent on it. He must have enjoyed the challenge enough to not charge full price or he doesn't care about his own labor value.

Anyone who followed my Dominator restoration knows I have large lapses in time between posts and progress. Well, we've picked up the project again on the 85.5. My Master Mechanic son has begun the nasty task of rewiring the car. He has the engine nearly rewired (not tucked away and cleaned up, just all the circuits connected. If your wondering, yes I sprung for a new engine wiring harness (thus the multi colored wireset). Should be serious progress over the next 3-6 months culminating in bodywork and paint.

A picture to share. Keep in mind this is work in progress!

Great project for a deserving car! Over time if those of us in the FEP community can educate the public on who the whiz-kids were behind the SVO's design and from a driver experience why they are desirable their value is sure to go up. They were a modern marvel in their time. And a really neat car all these years later.
