I think NC is going to have to revise their definition of what this is. They get car tags here, I have seen several as well and they have them for sale and on display at AutoFair as well. But the fact that you get car tags means you don't have to have a MC Operator's license (okay, fine I guess) BUT that also means you don't have to wear a helmet, which doesn't seem right.

My initial take was WTH? that thing looks dangerous!! A lot of the same dangers and none of the crash avoidance mobility of a motorcycle. I bet they don't have to pass the standard automotive NTSB crash testing.
Could be a class action lawsuit waiting to happen.
Also thought, that thing must cost a pretty penny?
Who would buy something like that???
Ass for every hat I guess.
Holy crap!!!
That thing lists for $23,999!!!!!!
I'm speechless.

Yeah, they are pricy as hell and more of a rich guy's play toy. They are not required to meet any real safety standards as they are kind of in a league of their own. Honestly, if I had the money, I would own one. They are fun as hell and are pretty nimble for what they are, as long as you are on dry pavement. Wet pavement tends to make the things pretty jittery. I got the chance to drive one and the owner even put a turbo on it which increased the fun factor tremendously. It's almost like a racing quad but for the pavement.

Sounds like suicide.
No thanks!!
They are registered as a motorcycle in MN & WI where brain buckets are optional (another machine to help weed out the stupid). I have seen several on the road & checked out one up close at a car show where I asked the owner if he had to carry an extra belt like a snowmobile (he was not amused). They seem to be big with the "everybody look at me crowd". I would pass on ownership of one of these, even if I won one at a casino (cash option please).

IMHO they are kinda cool. I would prefer a bit better styling, but I like the basic concept. They are for those of us that love riding motorcycles, but the wife and kids are so excited about you doing that! If I had the disposable cash, I would consider one, or build my own the way I want it with the engine in the back and powered by the either a ZX14 engine or the new H2 Kawasaki!

Only $23999? Pfft, chump change. The Campagna T-Rex starts at $57999 before you start optioning it out. But that gets you something over your head as well as a 160hp BMW I6 in something that weighs roughly 1000 lbs dry. They used to come with kawasaki engines. Some of those are always popping up on craigslist.

Honestly I am quite familiar with the T-Rex. I honestly wasn't that impressed with the build quality and the overall design. Cool in it's own way, but basically they take the motorcycle donor and strip off the engine/trans, instruments, switch gear from the handlebars and swap that into the T-Rex chassis. The "mirror pod" are just part of the fiberglass body and the actual mirrors are just stuck inside of the holes with no trim and just look bad IMHO. Several other things about the ride that just didn't impress me when I had the chance to check one out. Yes, they are fast and handle pretty well, then again that was when they were using the Kawasaki ZZR12 as the donor. Not sure about the BMW setup as I haven't seen one of those. I have thoughts and plans for one of my own and I have a ZX14 sitting on a chassis jig just waiting for the time and the money (well more the money! ) to build my own version that would be MUCH cooler!

I honestly haven't seen a T-Rex in person. So the news about the build quality is disappointing. But looking up the engines makes the change to BMW sound interesting.
The kawasaki motors appear to have made 160-179 hp and 91-101 ft lb depending upon year. The BMW is making 160hp but 129 ft-lbs. That plus the fact that I6 motors generally run smoother than I4s and the change makes some sense.
They did use the ZZR 14 for a couple of years, although I never saw one in person. The 14 had more power at around 192 HP and 113 lb/ft of torque to the rear wheel.
Never ridden a BMW, so I can't say anything about them. I am sure they are nice. I will say that I had a ZX12 and I have ridden a ZX14 and they were both BEASTS! I loved them!!! Big Block power and torque, but revving into the 12K range! The bikes could scare the H#LL out of you. The BMW may be more suited to the heavier T-Rex and may make it easier to drive, but I still doubt it has the top end charge the Kawasaki's had.
Either way, it's a vehicle that has a cult following and there are some other companies that make body kits for them too. If you think they are wild, stock check this out. http://www.aero3s.com/

If you've got close to 25k for a toy spend another 30 and do it right. Get an Ariel Atom. Suspension by Lotus, 4 wheels, perfect for track days and WAY more cool on the street. There was a good review of it on Top Gear some years back and while I think J Clarkson is a bit of a wanker(can I say that here? Sure-no one will get it ) it was fun to watch him with it.
I'd rather have a Caterham Seven
Not as radical but twice as retro cool and it's a car

Man, don't know if I could do that job ^^
The temptation to misplace one would be really tough!!!
I was able to snap a couple of pictures of this new BMW driving on I-70 here in Western Colorado. Looks like it was headed back to California, most likely doing some high altitude test/engine calibrations here in the Mountains. Unfortunately the pictures are not great as I was driving down the interstate at about 85 MPH trying to keep up with the BMW and that section is one of the bumpiest sections between Grand Junction and Denver.

Interestingly, they do that so spy photos can't get new styling details.
I know why they do it, it's just that one has to be one of the coolest I have seen in awhile. At least it doesn't mess with your eyes as bad as the black and white checker board does.
