Fix What?
Its a 64 Plymouth Valiant 200 sedan, not a Signet. It doesn't need fixing,,,except for the "rust and rattle free unitised body". Oh well, it begat every unitised slant and V8 Rear Mopar drive for the next 28 years...

Are you sure that's a '64? Although you can't see them very well the tail lights don't look right to me. They seem to be round like in a '62, but maybe that's just the way they appear in that pic since it's a side view and doesn't really show them.
Way back when my dad had a '63 Valiant and the second car I ever owned was a '61 Valiant, both with the slant 6. I remember how much fun it was to replace the points since the engine slanted to the distributor side making for a tight fit.

By the late 1960s early '70s ALL manufacturers were delivering specially tuned vehicles to certain magazines for testing and the Boss 351 certainly wasn't the first the same applies to the Boss 302 & 429 and certainly all the previous Shelby cars. However these were limited to fine tuning a specific engine's ignition timing and carburetor before testing not tearing down engines and replacing camshafts etc. Really there was no need since the biggest limit were the iron exhaust manifolds and state of tune as the engines already had strong compression solid lifter cams big carbs etc. Besides any hardware changes like headers would have been obvious. In those days when everything was adjustable carbs, ignition and valves (solid lifter cams) a professionally tuned engine made noticeably more power over an off the line new car but it wasn't anything an owner couldn't do for the same result.
So what exactly did Ford do to the 1982 Mustang GT press cars to make it a "ringer" for the testers? The Mustang had a best published 0-60 time of 6.9 seconds which sounds laughable today until you consider the 82 Corvette only ran 8.1 and the Porsche 911 ran 6.9 in 1982. Also just like 1971 various magazines came up with different acceleration times (and opinions) on their test cars which of course can be attributed to driver skill and track conditions.
I'll make it easy, ALL marketing, is not real?
ALL advertising is a sophisticated lie!
Ah, the Dart!
The press Boss 351 engines were radically altered from the eventual set up, much more so than the 1982 5.0. Total Performance wasn't dead at Ford.
In Australia, just the SCJ 429 780 CFM carb on a stock 400-d 715 cfm carbed M code 10.7:1 engine made it idle better, and slashed a 15.9 second quarter mile to 15.2, so it was worth over 25 hp, but it wou'dn't rev past 5200 rpm with the stock hyraulic cam . The point is the Boss made those sub 14 second, 104 mph passes with a worse carb.
Yeah, I forgot. Solid lifter cam were stock 351 Boss stuff. The Boss 351 cam they used on the other 1803 regular Production Option cars wasn't the stock RPO solid lifter cam that made the car so tractorble without a loss of wide open throttle performance...it was required because the 4300-D 715 CFM was a very hard animal for Ford to tame. Ford didn't have the handle on what cams worked with the Cleveland, so the overseas outposts did the development at 500 mile races in Australia. The first 1970 Phase II Falcon engine was exported from Canada with a K code 289 cam profile with the 351C firing order, and it ended up making 310 degrees and 505 thou lift from the special 1.73:1 rockers the 335 engines had over the 289 HP's 1.5:1 rockers. For three years In a row, Ford downgraded the cam duration, and got more performance. In 1971, it went down to a solid 300 degree cam for ther Phase III, and for the Boss 351, a 290 degree split pattern hydraulic cam with 477 thou lift. Quarter mile times came down from 14.8 to 14.6 to 14.4 seconds as the cam got down graded. The Aussie cars used the 1970 SCJ 429 carb just like the Boss 302 did. The Boss 351 was a very advanced car to make 100 mph plus 1/4 miles with just a cam and header change from production. It was also had deshroaded, low compression heads rated at 9.7:1 actual, but listed as a niminal 11.3 :1. Its technical breakthrough was that it just got milder, yet wilder with those extra 49 cubic inches over the Boss 302.
Each change yeilded the same power figures without loss of low speed torque. The same with the lack of headers...the alloy intake was the main gain. The change to hydraulic cams added even more goodness to the 351 Boss package. The deTomaso yielded crazy performance with the special European market hydraulic cam. The Bss was just so much better despite the extra 400 pounds over the Pantera
The killer cam was the US grind 300 degree cam that was used on the imported/exported PhaseIII engines. They got it from somewhere, it was the USA, home of LeMans wiining kick butt grunt, and the best cam grinders in the world. Aussie cars used 100% USA engineering with a lot of trained F1 engineers rebuiding the imported parts to spec. The Boss engine was preproduction engine with Aussie parts, because the Aussie cars, once sold, got the stock engines engines replaced with seasoned M code Cobra Jet and Q code Boss 351 4 bolt main blocks as they never got four bolt blocks from the factory in Australia. Ford still had its skunk works....
In a similar manner, the inital cam spec was claimed as the "351w marine cam" for the 1982 GT. It was able to do two up times of 0-60 in 6.9 secs, a 21.4 second 0-100 mph time, and a 15.1 second 1/4 mile in an optioned up Recaro'd and TRX'd GT Mustang and RS Capri. 130 mph top speed. At the very least, the press cars were 100% blueprinted, but based on the
When production tested, only 15.8 sec 1/4 mile, 127 mph, 0-60 in 7.5 seconds, 0-100 in 23.1 seconds, and that was with 161 hp and 247 lb-ft from the Capri RS 5.0 2-BBL HO. Car and Driver got 8.1 and 16.1 seconds for there Mustang 5.0 GT. It used the stock 1973 Torino 351W cam. Between the prpress and porduction cars, the engine lost 34 flywheel horspower. A 157 or 161 hp engine would have had to been 193 hp to drop 1 second off the quarter mile. Thats more than just a cam change.
I can only guess that Ford were telling the truth, and that the press cars has the marine 351w cam. Preproduction Fox 5.0's illicted performance that took years to filter down to normal production M codes.
There is no way 157 hp was even the flywheel figure as the 1987 GT had 225 hp and had trouble doing 136 mph and 15.4 second flat 1/4 miles.
And dropping a 180 pound passenger take only 0.3 secs off a 1/4 mile time in a 16.1 second car...its worth 10 extra hp.
Anyway, its the prep that makes the basic package so strong. Ford engineers did it within the rules.

I'm holding a reprint of the October 1981 Hot Rod test titled "One Trick Pony" in it they stated their test car would run 7.5 0-60 with 2 people on board and that Ford engineers claimed the 6.9 time. They also stated it had the 351 marine cam. Their car was clearly a prototype and the pictures showed the engine had an unpainted dual snorkel air cleaner and blue steel valve covers even the old style A/C compressor. But it was still impressive since it was a 2bbl carb single exhaust car.
I can tell you that when it was new and totally stock my 1982 Mustang GT walked away from my friend's 1981 4bbl a/t Corvette. Bad, I mean it wasn't even close that Corvette didn't stand a chance. He actually took it to the Chevy dealer insisting something was wrong with the engine, they checked everything and assured him it was running fine. Another very important fact is Ford kept all carburetor Mustang GTs easy to modify and of course the GT was launched with Ford's new Motorsport parts program. On the other hand the Chevrolet 4bbl carburetors on both Camaro and Corvette had a crude feedback electronic control system. The GM system was so intolerant that I clearly remember my friend lifting the air cleaner lid while the engine was idling and the engine would stumble and run rough, drop the lid back on and it would smooth out. Ford was building the Mustang/Capri for the enthusiast.
