Default mid 81 fuel tank change

I have an early 81 with the 12 gallon tank, does anyone know if anything structurally changed when Ford went to the 15 gallon tanks? I want to do that swap but won't if its a can of worms.

Seems like it could be a can of worms.

Great link. Thanks! Still in the fence about this.

I know I had gotten another later fuel tank in a parts deal and thought about it but I'm on the fence too due to the modification needed.

The early 81 tanks are just reheated 1979-1980 tanks. The fittings are strap and gutter bolt like this.

Since my car was an in liner, it also had a conmech style dual exhaust. In order to get to the chassis rails, I had to drop my tank to fit my towbar back in Feb 2015. Tiny 47 liter 12.4 US GAL Tank held on by two flat straps and a Pinto style RIM anti spark strike plate that have a very specfic placement to the staps.

My car was sadly later in a low speed accident involving a bridge that wrote it off...all the stock pickup points have to be used, its not somehing you can jury rig.

If its pre mid 1981, you use the 79-80 tank and straps, and small tank, or talk to a custom supplier like Glens tanks and get something specifically re-engineered to suit.
