I have always liked the thin red stripe around our black Turbo Coupe. I found this pic online several years ago and really liked the way the red stripe looked on this SVO
I would appreciate some honest opinions pro or con.
Thanks
Ron

Don't hate the red stripe, but not sure that I love it either.
It doesn't look bad or out of place, but IMHO you need some additional red to balance it out or make it more of a theme for the car rather than just a red stripe. Just my .02 worth.
I don't think I have any pictures, but years ago, I did a white SVO for a gentleman that wanted to be different. So we used the dark gray trim color and "blacked out" the center of the hood and also painted the inset of the sail panels to accent them. Not a huge amount of added color to the white, but it did make the car stand out a bit more.
I am doing a similar red accent theme on my silver 85 GT Road Racer, so I might be able to post up some pictures of the SVO sail panel theme in the near future.

If you still have the thin moldings between the front and rear tires, then I don't think this will work. However, if those moldings are gone (and expensive to find / replace), then go ahead with a stripe. As an alternative suggestion, what about the dual RED 1/8" pin stripes that the 79-84 4-eyed cars use?
I like the idea of adding some color to her but it needs a little more than just that. For a "factory look" a simple 1/8 inch pin stripe will will add some detail and maybe shadow the SVO stickers in red also. Get creative and go reflective with it.

I think it would look good...in the right shade of red. The photoshop above is just a bit too fluorescent. If a true red (darker than above) then I say go for it.

Trey, I agree that something more is needed to tie it all together. If you get pics of the sails I would like to see them.
Joe, are you talking about the trim moldings that run from wheel to wheel about half way up the wheel wells that's about 2 1/2" wide? If so they are still in place.
I like the idea of creative and have thought about some simple pinstriping here & there to set it off.
Hey Jason, I agree completely about the color. I am a bit limited on this computer, but did want something slightly darker red.
Thanks to each of you, your comments really are helpful.........that's what car brothers do for each other, right!!
I have never used any of the decals or tapes on a car, but I guess if I don't like it after it is done it can be removed without damaging the paint..........is that right"

Ron, I will try to get something for you if possible. I was hoping to work on the car today, but that didn't happen!
I also highly recommend vinyl wrapping. Same basic setup as decals, pinstripes, etc. you can do a ton of stuff with it. Yes, up close you can tell (depending on the quality of the wrap and the installer ) but otherwise it looks really good and you can just remove it if you don't like it!
You can do stripes and insets, etc. with it too if you have the desires and skills. The stuff is pretty forgiving and repositionable as long as you haven't squeegeed it down. Vivvid Vinyl has some cool stuff and are pretty good on pricing. 3M and Avery make some great stuff also, but tend to be a bit more expensive. I was going to wrap my 82 GT until the body work was more than expected and I ended up just painting it. I am wrapping the Road Racer in a matte silver metallic with the red accents. Anyway I will try and get you some pictures and good luck!

Trey, I went onto Vivvid Vinyl's website to look at what products they have. There is a wrap material called black holographic chrome. Have you ever seen it?
I am thinking that might be an interesting diversion from plain black on the balance of the car, if used to wrap the hood, the narrow strip under the lower rear wing, and the very narrow strip of black between the upper & lower taillight lenses.
Do you know if the wrap material and adhesive that they use is removable without harming the paint on a thirty three year old car?

The darker shade of red looks much better than previous renderings....
The thin moldings (SVO specific) are on the trailing edge of the front fender, entire door, and in front of the rear wheel opening:
If your car has these moldings, I would not remove nor try to change the color since they are very hard to locate (my $0.02).

Its to bright, a more subdued burgandy color would look good though

Would you say that putting dark red 3M tape over the molding would harm it, or would it be removable with no effect at some future date?
Are you talking about the pics in my first post, or the one from today with the darker red stripe?
Ron

When I got my car it had dark red. I like bright red better.
On my GT I've always ran thin bright red stripes at the top of the grey trim, and a thin red stripe where onetrackrider has the stripe. I also ran a single thin stripe around the polished edge of my 10 holes.
striped then waxed- stayed on for 20 years before it looked beat up.
when I redo my car I'll likely do much of same again.
In my opinion, the contour and texture of the original "thin" molding would be hard to cover with 3M tape.
However 3M or similar tape would not hurt the molding.
In some cases, when cars are re-painted, these moldings are removed. If you don't have the moldings, a wide stripe (tape) would be easy to install and look awesome.

OK, thanks, I see which molding you are talking about, and you are correct, it would be hard to get the tape to wrap around it and stay in place.
My thought was to run the tape just along the edge, (above that narrow molding), using it as a guide so the tape went on straight.

Well, late to the party, but still made it!
This is the best I can do right now. I thought I was going to have more time to work on the GT this week, but my truck needed some repairs and that kinda got away from me and screwed up my schedule. Anyway hopefully you get the idea.

Nice Trey.
It looks good, yet subtle.
A stripe like that could set off just about any colored car, other than red, without being a distraction.
Thanks for sharing thise pics.

i have some nice Picts- will dig for them.
The stripes are still there but not very nice anymore after all these years and miles.
In happier news, I finally tracked down a nice pair of GT moldings!
Back in 97 when my black 86 GT only had 200K on it, it was a head turner. Here it is with my then girlfriend (now wife's) 89 LX sport convertible (which afaik is still blown apart in a barn somewhere nearby - next owner had big plans and small budget).
The rims each have the thinner of the two pin stripes on the edge near the 10 holes. The grey trim also has stripes off the same roll the rest of the car was striped with.
Personal preference, but I loved it when it was still in good condition.
And yes - in these pictures 100% of the paint below the grey stripes is black Ace metal enamel..... but nobody would ever know unless I told them. Ropels finished the job on the back of the front fender and on the bottom of the drivers door after my dads compressor gave out too.

Hey erratic, that red stripe up high looks great on your GT.
I am not sure that would work as well on an SVO, but I will doodle one like it on the pic of our 84 tonight.
Thanks

I was always partial to the way it looked when it was how I wanted it.
I also liked it with blackouts front and rear, (no front license plate since I lived in KS at the time) etc.
The local police gave me way too much crap for the blackouts though. They had their purpose and I'll leave it at that.
