It should have the year of manufacture stamped into the main gear case on the passenger side. There should be an "84" with kind of a circle around it, if it's original to the car. IIRC, it's slightly forward and above the fill plug.

An early 1985 unit would have a 1984 date on it.

Yes, there is a partial (last eight character) VIN stamped on factory installed trans. It is on the side of main case, where it bolts to the bellhousing.

Stan Peace's website (pro-forceperformance.com) is good for ID'ing a T-5 that is missing its original ID tag.

Checked this link with pull-down for 1352-XXX codes...

    http://www.5speeds.com/t5/

    For 1352-065 it says, "Ford 1984 Mustang/Capri 5.0 V8"

According to their info above the identifier, it's non-World Class.

Thanks bud. At least I can be positive that this trans is original to the car since the vin stamp matches. Part of me is happy to see that it is original but the other part of me is sad it is a NWC. Now to make a final decision to rebuild or replace with a WC. Dilemmas!

If the car is mostly original, I'd consider rebuilding the original trans and keeping it original. There are plenty of modified Mustangs out there, not so many original ones. Especially in that color combination.

Just saying, if you want something unique, you may already have it.

I'm kind of leaning the direction of rebuilding the # matching transmission. I know down the road I will probably need to upgrade as I know power will be added to it, but I see that a few years off as other things are going to take precedence over power adders. I would like to keep the car semi-original but obviously not concourse correct as that is more of an investment than I can make.

Thanks for your help and ideas Pace!

If you are not going with a high hp engine or big sticky tire then a tranny swap to tko 500 or tko 600 or even better t56 are good options. However if your going to stick with the t5 make sure you replace the rear counter bearing support with an after market one even if your staying stock. You can easily see the difference between the two and the heavy duty one is not the ford part.

Yup, or just swap in a cheap 94-98 t-5 when your gonna beat on it. These are dirt cheap and almost bolt in. I used a 2001 t-5 behind my 302. I used a f-150 clutch/flywheel and starter as a cheap alternative to the $185 clutch for a v-6 stang and aftermarket 164 tooth flywheel. You can also get the f-250 5.8 clutch rated for over 8500gvwr for the same price.

Thanks for the information! Not looking for huge power #'s right now so an upgrade to a $2500+ tranny is not top priority. Good to know choices for future upgrades though. I will check on the aftermarket bearing support.
