Holy canoly! I just read your whole thread finally! Talk about enough information to make a guy's head spin like in a Poltergeist movie!!!

Makes me miss my old 84 Vert as I could have followed suit with this thread.

Simply amazing and cool all the work and testing you have done with this car. If anyone asks me about switching the 3.8 over to carb, I will definitely tell them to come here first and skip Google all together.

    Excellent work and documentation Mike!

For a guy that likes geometry, trigonometry and might be a brain surgeon on the side, I find it surprising it has been a challenge for you!

Seriously though, this car ended up with the right guy and stayed away from becoming paper clips.

Well, I dunno about all that, but the challenges are physical and financial, so, we improvise

I often refer to her as the little b*tch, but yes, her continuing to exist and operate is better than more paperclips, LOL!

Well, if you go 302, I know a car that would love your current set up.

Took Holley with manual choke (choke cable on hand is far too short) off, and put Motorcraft (D4TE-HA, originally from a '74 F250 with 390 and manual transmission (no kick-down, oh well, we don't need to be doing 180's kickin' down in the winter, LOL!), that's got 1.21" venturis) on with an added electric choke cap I had kicking around. Should be nice not having to "foot choke" pedal 'er until warmed enough to idle on it's own, which took a decent while since Holley's idle and off-idle circuits are dialed in for lean-best. The choke is connected with the white wire out of the rear of the alternator, that shows 9-something volts when she's running. Works fine warm and very briefly when cold I adjusted the cap position a bit and the fast idle RPM. Fine tuning exactly what it does when "cold" happens tomorrow.

If and when I do something like that, the majority of the fueling and ignition set-up (minus the 3.8 distributor) would remain. Very good lookin' Mustang

So the electric choke cap that I had kicking around, that I put onto the Motorcraft two-barrel, isn't working. Choices now would be a new electric cap, put the old heater hose heated cap back on and get a longer 3/4" heater hose so it can be mounted against it, or put Holley back on and get a longer hand choke cable. I'm leaning now toward putting the Holley back onto it, because Motorcraft's non-scienced-out circuits are notably richer.

So, if anyone going forward ever decides to convert their 3.8L V6 with EEC-IV & CFI over to using a carburetor and DuraSpark II distributor (for better function, performance, and economy than it ever got as it was, or ever will get), I've gotten permission from others to share some PM correspondence regarding questions and issues that I figure will be pertinent to everyone that will run into the same things that goes down this road.

Q - Can you please tell me the exact distributor you used in your conversion? I'm having all kinds of trouble finding the right one. I got a 1983 and it was way too short. Thanks for any help you can give me.

A - I know exactly what you're talking about with the shorter distributor, and mine's exactly the same, and it works fine. Mine is a E3SE-12127-AA. The TFI distributor's shaft does extend further down. Why? No idea, and it's not necessary. A DuraSpark II distributor is a bit shorter there, yes, but it still registers into the timing cover and drives the oil pump.

Q - OK I got the right distributor but now of the parts stores can find a cap to fit. The distributor is the cardone 30-2649. It looks like there has to be an adapter between the distributor and the cap??? Can you tell me the part number for your cap?

A - Yup, sure can... Standard Motor Products, part # FD170. I got mine at Rock Auto for 4 bucks.

Q - One more question...part # for cap and rotor? Thanks for the help.

A - I got all Standard Motor Products. Maybe not the best stuff but they're still working fine. The cap is part # FD151T, and the rotor is part # FD118 "blue streak".

The 500cfm Holley is back on this 3.8. Motorcraft's as-is lack of tuning, that originally sat on a 390 in a '74 F250, with it's low-speed stink and lack of fuel efficiency around town... I finally had enough of that nonsense, lol. I forgot how well it worked before. It's a pleasure to drive with Holley on it, with effortless, just off-idle scooting up to 50kph/30mph. Holley is real close to perfect, but isn't fully scienced-out (that comes when it's not sub-freezing outside, lol), and besides at start-up and for a few moments without a choke yet, it still doesn't act too lean with the colder temperatures. So, there's more fuel efficiency to find.

I love this thread! You've made the carb work better than efi, but it obviously takes a lot of work or supertuning. Most people don't have the stomach for it.

As far as your MPG increasing with higher speed have you thought about upping the gear a little? Maybe 308 or 323 will get you in the 'sweet spot.'

Thanks, glad you do! Yes, it takes some doing. It's too bad people don't, the rewards are many.

I'm not willing to bother with the 7.5" rear axle, but some more gear would absolutely be a step in the right direction for this.

I was at a swap meet yesterday and saw a Holley 350 CFM 2 barrel and thought of the one you put on Mike. Clearly it wasn't what you had gotten though. I never bought it at least thinking it was hard to come by. (PS: I didn't look at the number on it and I'm not good at identifying them by site either.)

I woulda tried to find and use one of those if I hadn't found this LIST-4412-2 500cfm inexpensively. They are getting hard to come by, and I've heard a number of people tell me that the racers hoard them. The most common aftermarket 350cfm, which is what you'll get if you buy one from Holley today, as in not an OE 2-barrel carburetor (there were some of those), is the LIST-7448.

PS - we went for a spin in the car today and I am still so happy how nice it runs and drives.

Hey, I have one of those sitting on a stand in my garage in front of my 85. I have been tempted to toss it and try my hand at a 2.3T, but I just love the sound of a big roller cam V-8!
