Jason: On the FAQ page I have a question about #3. See the sentence in bold below.

3 – Is it an ASC McLaren?

    Yes & No.
The ASC McLaren SC (convertible) & ASC McLaren Coupe (hatchback) were built on the assembly line with a special D32 code. This meant they were specially built just for ASC McLaren with some features or parts being deleted & certain special parts added. All ASC McLaren SC’s & Coupes had a D32 code on the buck tag. After they rolled off the production line, they were shipped to ASC McLaren in Livonia, MI for completion. The Motorsport Capri was to be a showcase vehicle for Mercury & was not built with the D32 code, but rather as a regular Capri RS / 5.0L model. After factory production, they too were sent to ASC McLaren. However they did not get the full treatment as the D32 coupes & convertibles did. Just the ASC McLaren side skirts, rear valance, rear wing & headlight/taillight covers were added. All Mercury & Capri factory emblems were left intact & ASC McLarens name was nowhere to be found on the car.
    What does this mean?

Where did the extra 25 cars come from? I just found it. That kinda busted my bubble a bit. Did you have options on the new ones found? I hope my silver is still the only one with T-Tops.

    1985/1986 ascMcLaren COUPE Chassis Mods
As on the prior EXTERIOR, all Mods are ascMcLaren done, except where
    noted, if any....

    CHASSIS:-

    * Employ MCLAREN Specific Damper Units & Springs to achieve better
cornering & a softer ride than the TRX System from Ford.
    * Modify Caster/Camber for front of vehicle to maximize
performance of upgraded tire & wheel combination. Re-Calibtrate
    Wheel Alignment Settings.
Settings Min. >>>>>>>> Pref. >>>>>>> Max
    Caster >>>> 1/2 >>>>>>>> 1-1/4 >>>>>> 2
    Camber >>>> - 3/4 >>>>>> - 3/4 >>>>>> -3/4
    Tow In >>>> 1/16 >>>>>> 3/16 >>>>>> 5/16

    For Racing Use: Camber -3/4
    Total Tow In 3/16

    * Increase Suspension Bushing Durometer.
    * Revise Power Steering to give more feedback & sensitivity by
employing Thunderbird Turbo Coupe Tie Rod Tips.
    * Install Carrera 50/50 Hi-Po shocks & lower suspension 1.5 inches
together with Higher Rate Springs for a lower center of gravity.
    * Tires: B.F. Goodrich Comp T/A High Performance Low Profile to
maximize the handling & ride quality and add visual impact.
    P225/50x15 VR-Series.

    * Revise Brake System by installing a Ford Motorsport Brake
    Proportioning Valve.

    Now....Here comes the "grey" area....
Scheduled to be done, but killed off in the 11th hour (a few such
cars will built....) was the next Mod. This was killed off as it
violated the SAE guidelines and wouild have required crash testing
which they were not prepaired to do:-

    * Revise Brake System by changing linings to Sintered Metallic
    materials

    * On 5-Speed cars change shift linkage to HURST to shorten throw &
give a tighter feel. (I have no proof of this ever being done. You guys
might know better than I, on THIS one!!). I do not believe it was done.

    * Wheels:-
Imported from Campagnolo from Italy 15" x 7" Cast Aluminum with
rolled rim in BBS-Style (STYLE!!) waffle-Grid design, enamel-baked
on color with clearcoat glaze on Popsicle Orange and Oxford White
examples. Imported into the USA by the MSW Wheel Corp. Also
offered in Anthracite and Oxfore White.

    ENGINE.

    (Power Gain of 5%).
    * Upgrade Exhaust Header (Stainless Steel) Internal Mandrel Bent to

Great looking site Jason. You have done a lot of research on those cars and I'm sure the owner's and prospective buyers really appreciate it. I know I appreciate it just being a Capri owner.

Lot's of good info in your first reply to my question. Thanks for that! I have to read it again and absorb it all. May have some questions about it all. We can take it to another thread, so as to not derail this one any further, if we need to. But it did not answer what I was trying to get at. Your second reply (the one I quoted above) did.

I can tell you that none of the ascMcLaren Coupes buck tags that I have seen have a "D32" code on them. The Coupe buck tags that I have seen say:

    MCLAREN COUPE
    MCLAREN COUPE

    or

    MCLAREN COUPE
    COUPE

I don't even think that D32 code is on the build sheet either, although I have not seen a lot of build sheets.

i just worded poorly. can go back & fix that.
what i meant was all ASC McLarens were built under the D32 code & it would reflect that on the bucktag (bug tag would not nessarily SAY D32, but had a code that workers could identrify so the car could be built as an ASC)

Here is a pic of my one of my 1985 build sheet and buck tag...this is an early car as lowest production vin #605449, this one being #605439 with some "mods" done, possibly ASC performed. This car does not have the small 2nd buck tag (no extra hole on core support) reading "Mclearan Coupe" like my other one has. Name: image.jpg
