    Default 3 inch tail pipe

The only 3 inch tail pipe I can find is Flowmasters for $278 a pair.

Are there any alternatives to that? What about a custom pipe bending from the mufflers back?

I cant believe its almost 300 bucks for 2 pipes. Gotta be another way.

Would you settle for 2.5" from On3

    Not 100% on fitment.

wont I lose a lot of power and flow by reducing the pipes after the muffler?

Id do it if there was no downside.

You would probably need to be making over 500 hp to see a difference between 2 1/2" and 3" tailpipes.

The other option is to sell your X pipe and mufflers and buy a 2.5" kit. If you have a large number of Fox owners in your area that might be a great option or you might even find someone that is willing to try a 2.5" setup for your 3".

    Good Luck!

    Well then never mind!

You can reduce the tail pipes after the muffler and there shouldn't be any real issue other than making everything fit and sealed.

The issue will most likely be the loss of low end torque due to the 3 inch mid pipe.

I visited 2 muffler shops today, both said I can reduce the pipe to 2.5 after the muffler with no noticeable side effects. So I guess Ill be looking for the best price for 2.5 inch tail pipes and a set of reducer fittings.

Im searching for 2.5 tail pipes and im a bit confused as to what year pipe I should be ordering. Since Im upgrading an 84, should I be getting tail pipe for an 86?

I found some low cast 2.5 pipe on carid.

whats the opinion for this one?

The sub lists for this line offers varied lengths.

Same Dynomax parts you can buy at Summit or Jegs for about the same money (+free shipping).
The 45209/45210 are polished stainless tails, the 45230/45231 are aluminized and don't look near as nice exposed.

i'd bite the bullet and fork over the extra cash for the 3" tailpipes. knowing my exhaust was corked down to 2.5" from 3" would make me feel like i cut corners where i shouldn't have. not saying it would bother you, but every time i saw them i know it would bother me.
    i have a 1992 GT, 4.10, 5spd.

If the rest of the system really is 3" (I have my doubts), it's already way too large for a CFI 5.0.
There is nothing to be gained maintaining that size after the muffler.

Agreed. 2 1/2 should be good. If I remember correctly, less back pressure hinders performance.

Not so much. It's not about back-pressure at all, it's about flow velocity.

I checked the X pipe and the headers and they do have 3 inch diameter pipes.

I ordered the DynoMax 2.5 tail pipes from CarID.com. They are $55 each and the shipping was only 8 bucks. All I need now is a pair of 3 to 2.5 reducers.

Yes they are lesser quality than the 2.5 flowmasters but im at the limits of my budget and I prefer to get the system set up and I can always change the tail pies next year if I don't like them. I doubt there will be a major issue though.

Now I have to plan out what to do about the external fuel pump. Do I need any hardware or hangers for the X pipe and mufflers/ What year Mustang do I do my search using?

It would help a lot if you told people exactly what engine combination you are putting in the car. Without knowing that, there is no way to make any recommendation on parts that affect flow capacity (fuel or air).

Unless you are making over 500hp, the extra weight of the 3" exhaust will make the car accelerate, brake and corner worse due to the added weight.
