You might be able to get a hardware store to mix you up some oil-based paint (like Rustoleum) in your color. Then you could just use a foam brush to apply it, (since it's a small area) and color-sand and buff it to perfection. Or I guess an automotive paint shop can mix up something a little better and even put it in a spray-can. If you have an airbrush, then you have options.

It's pretty common for them to rust there. I think it's from moisture condensing between the sunroof frame and the roof sheetmetal - or outside water leaking in, and rusting it there.

My '82 was doing that by the time it was 10 - 12 years old, and it wasn't too much of a rust-bucket.

Back in the mid '90s I saw an '84.5 GT350, and a quarter of one of its A-pillers had rusted away, from the roof seam down several inches! The rest of the car looked fine.

My belief is this is one area Ford cheaped out on and didn't use enough rust preventative procedures in the build.

Ok....results of the water hose test came back
It's leak free in the sunroof area.
The drivers side quarter window leaks like a sieve from the lower rear corner.
The passenger side quarter window seeps from the top
Getting water in the hatch that comes out from the seam.......I assume where the spoiler mounts needs sealed.
No other leaks around the car detected

A couple of things I did notice around the sunroof area that I'm sure is the majority the issue.
The seam around the perimeter of the sunroof where the roof metal meets the sunroof frame is not well sealed. I would think that this area would have seam sealer to help prevent condensation from slipping past the seam and creeping upwards to the inside roof sheetmetal.
Where the spot I filled with bondo is, the sunroof weatherstripping is in pretty bad shape so it holds water there for a while until it seeps down or evaporates.

Hate to say it but I'm kind of afraid to poke around any further..........

You may need to add some sealant to that sunroof panel joint, my car has a more than adequate amount. Guess it all depends on who did it on the line and what day of the week it was LOL. The drains should empty fairly quickly. I don't believe the outside sunroof gasket is there for anything more than keeping trash out. It never did seal tightly to my opening from day one. I think the inside gasket is the one that prevents water from getting in the car.

After taking a little break from everything car related for a little while due to just not feeling it and being in a funk about the vert deal....I got back to work on the GT this weekend and all things considered, it felt good to be back working on the car. Many thanks to the guys that let me vent off some frustrations, you guys rock!

Started off with taking care of the coolant leak that developed. Changed the heater hoses that supply the heater core as the supply was the culprit. Easy enough right? Kinda but in the process I had to do it twice as sometime in the past the hoses were changed out with 3/4" hose which was wrong, I needed 5/8" as the 3/4" was too large. Oh well, it is done correctly now!

Got back to work cleaning and swapping out the interior pieces. I must say that it is amazing the kind of things 30 years may hide in a car! I found about $4 worth of bills and change, casino tokens, hidden trash and a live .22 rifle round wedged in the e-brake cavity! No build sheet though.

Gutted the interior and in true automotive fashion......hidden surprises reared their not so pretty faces. The floor of the car will be a winter project and have to be addressed before next season.

Uh oh, floor doesn't sound too good, hope it is nothing too bad. I've taken the last month off of mine too, sometimes you just need to.

The driver side front floor is not too terribly bad. The front seat bolt/brace has been welded at one point in time as indicated by the blob welds by the bolt. The drivers side rear floor has the lard butt crack in it by the rear seat mount which will need repaired. The passenger side rear floor has a puncture wound almost center and just in front of the rear seat mounts. The passenger front also has a puncture wound ahead of the front seat mount and as seen in the picture has major rust issues. When cleaning this area up, a couple of pinholes developed to where you can see through to the outside.

The very front of the floor on the incline to the firewall looks fairly decent but I do see indication of moisture so when I pull the dash out later this week I will have to see if I have a bad seal somewhere or if there are more rust issues behind the dash.

There is not really much I can do for the floor repair at this point in time and I since don't drive the car in the rain at this time, I decided just to put the repairs on the winter work list and put the car back together and enjoy it the rest of the summer as I don't think a couple more months will really change the grand scheme of life in this case.

I cleaned the hell out of the plastics, upholstery and the replacement carpet and put her back together. I still have to put the headliner back in but all of the cleaning and replacement interior pieces have made a huge improvement over the previous pieces. If anything, at least it looks cared for again!

Looking better for sure and that rust could be a whole lot worse. Almost converted my 84 to tan but the parts were too hard to find (door panels, seat belts).

I know that. It is weird that they make the carpet, seat belts and assorted odds and ends in sand beige but finding desert tan is ridiculous!

I'm just glad the dash pad is not all busted up!

It's not been easy the past few weeks and I really started second guessing some of my decisions in regards to these cars BUT the time away from even looking at them helped tremendously. I wasn't really in the mood when I started back up on the GT, it actually started when I was having a cold beverage and winding down after work in the garage and looked at the hood stripe thinking to myself, that looks like crap....it was filthy and turning white with oxidation. I grabbed a microfiber cloth and some cleaner/detailer and started wiping it down to see if I could make it look better. I will let you guys be the judge......

I really need to do that and also order another set of GT's for the fenders and get the badges flipped into the correct order and I think it will almost be perfect!

I have almost just removed the 5.0 badges and left the GT badges for now until I can get it done correctly. I don't think there will be enough room to put the 5.0 under the GT without making it look like they are too low.....then again it might look better even a bit to low than above the GT.

Didn't get much done last night due to the tsunami style rain storms we had all day, but I did try to get a few things in between rounds. I haven't seen rains like this up here in ages. Had I of known it was going to rain like this, I would have left the carpet out for a couple days and seen if the floors got wet indicating an active leak.

    Coulda, shoulda, woulda......didn't!

So now I'm curious/concerned after seeing the condition of the floorpans after the carpet replacement.
I did check to see if any of the new carpet was wet, pulled up the front of the carpet and so far it seems to still be dry. Moved towards the back seat and BAM took a dose of water right to the ear! Damn car gave me a wet willy!

Looked up and saw the D/S sunroof glass bolt leaking.

For a ghetto fix due to the weather, I simply took some aluminum duct sealing tape and covered the cover on the glass until tomorrow when the sun comes out and I have time to take it apart and re-seal it. The carpet didn't appear to be too terribly wet so hopefully no harm, no foul there.

Still pondering the floorpan rust, I decided to take a peek in the cowl to see what it looked like. I needed to do this anyways as the windshield washer nozzle was MIA from the vent and a few screws were missing. Popped the wiper arm off and removed the vent. For reasons unknown to me, I found the MIA nozzle.....it was just hanging around in the cowl avoiding doing it's job and messing with Sasquatch!

At first glance, everything metal wise looks fairly decent and no major issues but then I looked at this picture this morning and I don't know if it's my eyes playing tricks on me or if what I see is what I think it is...........a CRACK! I sure hope it isn't!

Guess I will need to look again this evening, we have had over 6" of rain the past 24 hours so something should show if it is a crack and leaking.

Does look suspiciously like a crack from the picture..... My sunroof leaked around the bolts too, there was a gasket on top of the glass under the bracket that I ended up replacing. Silicone probably would have worked fine though.

Thanks for the inadvertent reminder to grab a roll of seam "tape" and a tube of caulk today, Travis. The tape is essentially the same thing as 3M's strip caulk and the tube caulk is a high tack, flexible and paintable EPDM based seam sealer. Both of these items are used to seal seams in an evaporative condenser or cooling tower for air conditioning systems. I know the tape caulk will be perfect for many of the little sealing jobs.

Well......I'm somewhat skeptical to report that after having 8+ inches of rain the past couple days, I did not seem to notice any major leak issues with the car other than the sunroof latch. I did notice that the rear sunroof drain hoses do not want to stay in the holes, I think the hose has shrunk a bit over the years. I need to grab some new hose and get them redone.

Man I wish my car wasn't such a mis-match Hodge podge that it is other wise I would be keeping the tan interior. I think I will probably go to a darker color eventually beings I have to replace a lot of interior pieces. Mine came with black center console and door panels and I think by the time I find everything it will be easier to do a color swap which is a shame. You don't see very many desert tan cars anymore that's for sure.

Ok, this might sound stupid but my GT hits it's first "show" tomorrow morning. There's a weekly local cars and coffee show here and I'm going to take the plunge and take it in all of its disarray! I'm nervous that the poor car will either be ragged on or completely overlooked. So far this year there has never been a four eye even brought to this event.
