Default Cleaning and Greasing a Hurst Comp Plus Shifter?

I just picked up a used Hurst Comp Plus shifter for my 85 and I notice it has a lot of dirt and other crap embedded in the grease that's found at the base of the gear stick and the underside where the gear sick comes through the shifter base (right above the ball that mounts the shifter to the trans). Can this be cleaned out and re-greased? If so, how do I go about making sure I grease it enough and what grease do I use?
These shifters come with a boot that typically protects theses parts from dirt, but with mine being used it didn't come with this boot.

Also, when I look into the area where the shifter meets up with the trans (that square area that's exposed when the shifter is removed) is ther supposed to be any oil or grease inside or should it be dry?

    Thanks!
    Cheers!

Yes, you can clean it out, then use a synthetic grease to lube the shifter pivot and the ball where is fits in the shift rail cup.

And there is no lube in the shifter well in the trans other than splash lube from the trans fluid.

Thank you. After I clean out the old grease and I'm ready to apply the new, do I need to use a gun to get it to go all the way through or can I use my fingers and grease the inside by the gear stick and then flip it over and do the ball side the same way?
    Cheers!

I'd take it apart to grease it, just watch out for the detent spring.
